setup · necmttn — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Installs the ax environment, builds a local DuckDB session graph, and validates the agent configuration.
npx skills add Necmttn/ax --skill setup -a claude-codeWhat setup does
The skill fetches install.sh into a temporary directory, presents it for review, and runs the script only after explicit confirmation. Next, it links axctl to ~/.local/bin/ax, adds ax skills to the coding agent, and executes ax ingest --since=7. That step ingests the last 7 days of agent transcripts into a local graph.
Storage runs on an embedded DuckDB file inside ~/.local/share/ax/. No background daemon stays in memory. Cache queries automatically trigger a background refresh when stale. The skill then runs ax doctor --json to verify the setup and prompts you to categorize untagged tools with ax skills classify. If $HOME/.local/bin is missing from PATH, shell sessions will fail to locate ax.
What it helps with
- install the ax CLI and related agent skills
- verify environment health using
ax doctor - seed the DuckDB session graph with 7 days of history
- assign functional roles to unclassified skills
- review model spending breakdown across runs
Example prompts for the agent
- Install and set up ax in Claude Code
- ax not found, fix the installation
- Run ax doctor to check the system

Questions about setup
How to install setup in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add Necmttn/ax --skill setup -a claude-code. The skill will be saved to ~/.claude/skills/setup/SKILL.md.
What is the purpose of the setup skill?
It automates installing ax, opens the installer for manual review, ingests recent agent sessions into an embedded DuckDB database, and validates everything with ax doctor.
Does ax require a persistent background daemon?
No, ax maintains its graph in an embedded DuckDB file at ~/.local/share/ax/. Commands update data on demand in the background, so no active service process needs to run.
