setup · marketcalls — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Sets up a Python backtesting environment with VectorBT and OpenAlgo. It configures the virtual environment, installs dependencies, and prepares .env.
npx skills add marketcalls/vectorbt-backtesting-skills --skill setup -a claude-codeWhat setup does
The skill checks the host operating system and initializes a fresh venv. It defaults to python3. You can also pass a specific version like python3.12. Once initialized, it upgrades pip and installs libraries including vectorbt, openalgo, plotly, duckdb, and openstatz. Notice that it installs openstatz instead of QuantStats.
OpenAlgo already provides over 100 indicators. Compiling the C-based TA-Lib is optional. If you choose to enable TA-Lib, the skill prompts you to install the underlying OS-level C library first using Homebrew, apt, or pre-built Windows wheels. It also creates a top-level backtesting directory. Strategy subfolders are generated later during test runs.
An interactive prompt gathers connection details for your target data feeds. You can provide an OpenAlgo API token, point to a DuckDB database file, or set CCXT keys for crypto trading. The skill appends .env to .gitignore immediately. That keeps credentials out of source control.
What it helps with
- create an isolated Python venv for VectorBT backtesting
- configure .env credentials for OpenAlgo, CCXT, and DuckDB
- install trading analytics packages without forcing a TA-Lib build
- verify that all market data and backtesting libraries import properly
Example prompts for the agent
- Set up the backtesting environment using setup
- Run setup python3.12 to initialize the project
- Prepare the Python workspace for vectorbt with setup
