microservices-patterns · manutej — Claude Code skill: Istio and resilience
A microservices skill covering service mesh, circuit breakers, traffic splitting and Istio. Useful when services fail in cascades or you need a canary release.
npx skills add manutej/luxor-claude-marketplace --skill microservices-patterns -a claude-codeWhat microservices-patterns does
The skill hands your agent working templates for microservice architecture: VirtualService and DestinationRule manifests, version-based traffic splitting, connection pools, outlier detection. It walks through the Istio data plane and control plane, the role of Istiod, Envoy sidecars and the iptables rules that intercept traffic.
A separate section covers resilience: circuit breaker states, retries with exponential backoff and jitter, timeouts, and fault injection for testing assumptions. There is material on mTLS, distributed tracing, and ingress and egress gateways.
One caveat: everything here assumes Istio and Kubernetes, so the YAML examples expect a cluster with the mesh already running. Without a control plane there is nowhere to apply those manifests, which makes this worth checking before you install.
What it helps with
- run a canary release by splitting traffic weights
- stop cascading failures with a circuit breaker
- add retries with exponential backoff and jitter
- turn on mTLS between services in the mesh
- understand how the Istio data plane and control plane fit together
Example prompts for the agent
- write a VirtualService that splits traffic 90/10 between v1 and v2
- configure outlier detection so failing instances get ejected from the pool
- inject a delay into a route to test how the service holds up

Questions about microservices-patterns
How do I install microservices-patterns in Claude?
Run npx skills add manutej/luxor-claude-marketplace --skill microservices-patterns -a claude-code. The skill file then lands at ~/.claude/skills/microservices-patterns/SKILL.md.
What does microservices-patterns do?
It gives the agent templates and explanations for microservice patterns: service mesh, traffic routing, circuit breakers, retries, timeouts, mTLS and distributed tracing with Istio.
What do I need for the examples to work?
The configs target Istio and Kubernetes, so you need a cluster with the service mesh deployed. Without a control plane there is nothing to apply the VirtualService and DestinationRule manifests to.
