Houdini — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Controls SideFX Houdini from the shell using the Flue Python bridge without an MCP server. Useful for inspecting nodes, parameters, and geometry.
npx skills add SFKislev/Flue --skill houdini -a claude-codeWhat Houdini does
This skill operates desktop SideFX Houdini through Flue, a shell-to-application bridge. The agent pipes Python into houdini_bridge.py, runs calls against the hou module, and receives structured JSON responses back via standard streams.
You can inspect nodes, scene geometry, parameters, and active selections, or run small scripts. The safety contract expects the agent to treat the human as the driver, take small inspectable steps, and avoid destructive actions.
The bridge requires Flue on your machine. If Flue is missing, the agent cannot silently run pip install flue && flue setup; it must ask for explicit approval first.
What it helps with
- inspect open scene nodes and their parameters
- check geometry data and active selections
- run targeted
houscripts from the terminal - make bounded edits to desktop Houdini projects
Example prompts for the agent
- Inspect the open Houdini scene and list parameters on the selected node
- Run a hou script to check the geometry on geo1 and return the JSON result
- Check what is currently selected in Houdini

Questions about Houdini
How to install Houdini in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add SFKislev/Flue --skill houdini -a claude-code in your terminal.
What does the Houdini skill do?
It lets your coding agent inspect and edit live SideFX Houdini desktop scenes through a local CLI-to-Python bridge.
Does this skill require an MCP server?
No, it talks to Houdini via houdini_bridge.py over stdin and stdout. It requires Flue, which is set up locally using pip install flue && flue setup.

--- name: Houdini description: Control SideFX Houdini from the shell via Flue - a Python bridge to hou without an MCP server. --- This skill lets a coding agent operate **SideFX Houdini** on the desktop through [Flue](https://github.com/SFKislev/flue), a local shell-to-application bridge. The agent pipes Python into `houdini_bridge.py` and gets structured JSON back. > agent shell -> `houdini_bridge.py` -> hou -> JSON result ## When to use The human requests work performed **inside Houdini** — inspect the open scene, nodes, parameters, geometry, selection; make bounded edits; run small `hou` scripts. A CLI agent cannot act inside Houdini without a bridge like Flue. ## How to proceed 1. **Read `FLUE.md` in this directory first.** It explains how Flue works, the bridge contract, a worked `hou` example, and safety expectations. 2. **If Flue is installed:** also read `C:\Users\fredd\.claude\skills\flue\SKILL.md` and `adapters/houdini_adapter/APP.md` for the operational contract, then work from there. 3. **If Flue is not installed:** tell the human. The install command is `pip install flue && flue setup`. Do not install without explicit approval in the current session. ## Other apps Flue also supports Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, InDesign, Audition, Blender, 3ds Max, Unity, and Microsoft Office through the same stdin/stdout contract. One install covers all adapters. ## Safety Flue acts inside professional desktop software. Treat the human as the driver; prefer small, inspectable steps; avoid destructive actions unless explicitly requested. Flue is MIT-licensed and reviewable on GitHub / PyPI before use.
