What godot-platform-desktop does

The skill covers the desktop side of a Godot game: settings menus, window management, key rebinding, and store integration for Steam and Epic. It ships a set of scripts the agent reads before writing anything. Among them are desktop_window_manager.gd for DPI-aware multi-monitor positioning, desktop_settings_persistent.gd for ConfigFile persistence, physical_input_rebinder.gd for rebinds via physical_keycode, and platform_sdk_wrapper.gd for guarded Steamworks and Epic calls.

The order is fixed: window and DPI first, then settings, then rebinds, then close-request handling, and store SDK calls last. Settings and user data go to user:// because res:// is read-only in an exported build. Movement rebinds use physical_keycode, otherwise they break on AZERTY or Dvorak layouts. Steam and Epic calls sit behind an Engine.has_singleton() check so the game does not crash without the overlay installed.

Small traps matter too. On focus loss (Alt-Tab) the skill tells you to release held actions with Input.action_release, or the character keeps running after you come back. Before quitting, catch NOTIFICATION_WM_CLOSE_REQUEST and flush the ConfigFile. The skill targets Godot 4 and expects the agent to read the relevant script instead of improvising.

What it helps with

  • build a settings menu with resolution, window mode and volume
  • rebind keys so WASD survives AZERTY and Dvorak layouts
  • persist settings between launches under user://
  • wire up Steamworks or Epic without crashing on builds that lack the SDK
  • close the game on Alt+F4 without losing settings

Example prompts for the agent

  • Add a settings menu with resolution and window mode options, use the scripts from the godot-platform-desktop skill
  • Set up input rebinding with physical_keycode so the layout does not break movement
  • Wrap the Steam calls in Engine.has_singleton and add a stub for builds without the SDK

Questions about godot-platform-desktop

How do I install godot-platform-desktop in Claude?

Run npx skills add thedivergentai/Game-Dev-Agentic-Skills --skill godot-platform-desktop -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/godot-platform-desktop/SKILL.md.

What does godot-platform-desktop do?

It hands your agent ready scripts and rules for the desktop side of a Godot game: window and DPI handling, ConfigFile settings, key rebinding, close-request interception and a store SDK wrapper.

Why must settings go to user:// instead of res://?

In an exported build res:// is read-only, so writes there fail. The skill requires settings and user data to live under user://.
