What file-organization does

This skill outlines a systematic workflow for sorting messy directories such as Downloads. It prompts the assistant to inspect files with standard terminal utilities: identifying space hogs with du and spotting identical copies using md5sum hashes.

Work follows a strict five-step order. The assistant inspects the folder, drafts a directory structure, asks for user sign-off, moves items systematically, and outputs a brief summary.

Safety rules prevent silent file removal. Your agent requires a shell environment equipped with standard POSIX commands (find, du, sort).

What it helps with

  • locate exact file duplicates using hash or size checks
  • clean up bloated download folders into categorized directories
  • sort project files and images by date or department
  • surface massive files before moving them to cold storage

Example prompts for the agent

  • Analyze ~/Downloads, identify duplicate files, and suggest a clean folder hierarchy.
  • List the largest files in this directory and group the rest by extension.
  • Organize these exported reports into folders by calendar year.
