e2e-testing-automation — Claude Code skill for E2E tests
A skill that helps you write end-to-end tests: browser flows, user journeys and frontend-backend integration checks.
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill e2e-testing-automation -a claude-codeWhat e2e-testing-automation does
The skill covers how to build end-to-end tests that run the whole stack, from the UI down through backend systems. It opens with a short Playwright example: open a page, add a product to the cart, assert the counter, move to checkout. From there it points to reference guides in references/ for Playwright, Cypress, Selenium with pytest, and the Page Object Model pattern.
A separate section lists practices. It advises data-testid attributes over brittle CSS selectors, Page Object Model for maintainability, explicit waits instead of sleep, cleaning up test data after each run, and screenshots on failure. Tests should run across several browsers and be parallelised where possible.
What to avoid: testing every UI combination, sharing state between tests, ignoring flaky tests, and reaching for E2E where a unit test would do. If your key elements have no data-testid, the skill hits that wall on the first scenario — you will need to add them to the markup.
What it helps with
- write a checkout flow test from cart to confirmation
- cover login and signup in a browser without manual runs
- move selectors and page actions into a Page Object Model
- run one scenario across several browsers
- catch UI regressions after markup changes
Example prompts for the agent
- write a Playwright E2E test for the checkout flow
- port this scenario to Cypress and add a cart assertion
- create a Page Object for the login page and rewrite the tests against it

Questions about e2e-testing-automation
How do I install e2e-testing-automation in Claude?
Run npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill e2e-testing-automation -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/e2e-testing-automation/SKILL.md.
What does e2e-testing-automation do?
It helps you write end-to-end tests that simulate user actions in a browser and check the full stack. It ships examples for Playwright, Cypress and Selenium with pytest.
Do I need Playwright set up first?
The quick start uses @playwright/test, while the reference guides also cover Cypress and Selenium with pytest. Pick whichever fits your project.

## Overview
End-to-end (E2E) testing validates complete user workflows from the UI through all backend systems, ensuring the entire application stack works together correctly from a user's perspective. E2E tests simulate real user interactions with browsers, handling authentication, navigation, form submissions, and validating results.
## When to Use
- Testing critical user journeys (signup, checkout, login)
- Validating multi-step workflows
- Testing across different browsers and devices
- Regression testing for UI changes
- Verifying frontend-backend integration
- Testing with real user interactions (clicks, typing, scrolling)
- Smoke testing deployments
## Quick Start
Minimal working example:
```typescript
// tests/e2e/checkout.spec.ts
import { test, expect, Page } from "@playwright/test";
test.describe("E-commerce Checkout Flow", () => {
let page: Page;
test.beforeEach(async ({ page: p }) => {
page = p;
await page.goto("/");
});
test("complete checkout flow as guest user", async () => {
// 1. Browse and add product to cart
await page.click("text=Shop Now");
await page.click('[data-testid="product-1"]');
await expect(page.locator("h1")).toContainText("Product Name");
await page.click('button:has-text("Add to Cart")');
await expect(page.locator(".cart-count")).toHaveText("1");
// 2. Go to cart and proceed to checkout
await page.click('[data-testid="cart-icon"]');
await expect(page.locator(".cart-item")).toHaveCount(1);
await page.click("text=Proceed to Checkout");
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Best Practices
### ✅ DO
- Use data-testid attributes for stable selectors
- Implement Page Object Model for maintainability
- Test critical user journeys thoroughly
- Run tests in multiple browsers (cross-browser testing)
- Use explicit waits instead of sleep/timeouts
- Clean up test data after each test
- Take screenshots on failures
- Parallelize test execution where possible
### ❌ DON'T
- Use brittle CSS selectors (like nth-child)
- Test every possible UI combination (focus on critical paths)
- Share state between tests
- Use fixed delays (sleep/timeout)
- Ignore flaky tests
- Run E2E tests for unit-level testing
- Test third-party UI components in detail
- Skip mobile/responsive testing
