dotfile-audit — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Inspects and repairs pipeline DOT files before execution. It spots missing retry routes, non-standard node parameters, and gaps against project specifications.
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill dot-file-audit -a claude-codeWhat dotfile-audit does
This skill inspects DOT files used by automated coding pipelines. It examines the core graph topology, checking for single start nodes with shape=Mdiamond and single exit nodes with shape=Msquare. Graph blocks receive checks for required settings such as goal or retry_target. If the graph includes invented keys like join_policy or error_policy, the skill strips them out. Unsupported attributes break the parser.
When provided with a design document, the skill reconciles pipeline stages against written requirements. It confirms that every listed component contains implementation, testing, and Git commit steps. Once edits finish, it runs dotfile validate <file>.dot in a loop. Pipelines with validation errors will not execute. The process repeats until the checker reports zero warnings.
What it helps with
- fix structural errors and missing exits in pipeline DOT graphs
- attach failure handling paths to code generation steps
- verify that pipeline phases cover the project requirements document
- clear all warnings from
dotfile validate
Example prompts for the agent
- Audit pipeline.dot and correct any syntax or structural mistakes
- Reconcile workflow.dot against spec.md to verify every component has tests
- Inspect build.dot and supply missing retry targets for failing nodes

Questions about dotfile-audit
How do I install dotfile-audit in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill dot-file-audit -a claude-code. The skill file is placed in ~/.claude/skills/dot-file-audit/SKILL.md.
What does dotfile-audit do?
It reviews pipeline DOT graphs before they run, catching broken logic and unhandled failure branches. It also ensures that all components defined in design documents are reflected in the pipeline steps.
Why does the skill remove invented node attributes?
Custom properties such as join_policy or max_parallel are not supported by the pipeline execution engine. The audit removes invalid attributes so the graph conforms to the engine specification.
