What github does

This skill teaches the agent how to interact with GitHub repositories using the official gh CLI. It covers routines like checking pull requests, listing issues, and fetching raw endpoint data with gh api.

A primary focus is CI troubleshooting. The skill outlines a four-step sequence to investigate broken builds: running gh pr checks, listing recent runs via gh run list, viewing failed jobs with gh run view, and isolating failure logs with --log-failed. It also enforces structured JSON formatting using --json and filtering with --jq.

The environment must have the gh tool installed and authenticated. Running these commands outside a git checkout will fail unless the agent provides the --repo owner/repo flag or direct repository URLs.

What it helps with

  • inspect failing CI checks on a pull request
  • extract error logs from broken workflow runs
  • query pull request fields using the GitHub API
  • list and filter repository issues in JSON format

Example prompts for the agent

  • Check which tests failed on PR 55 in owner/repo and show the failure logs
  • List the 10 most recent workflow runs for owner/repo
  • Query PR 55 using gh api to get the title and state

How to install github

Questions about github

How to install github in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a claude-code. The skill file will be created at ~/.claude/skills/github/SKILL.md.

What does the github skill do?

It provides command patterns for inspecting pull requests, tracking workflow runs, and viewing logs for failed CI steps with the gh CLI.

What prerequisites does this skill require?

It relies on an authenticated installation of the gh CLI. When executed outside a local repository checkout, commands must specify --repo owner/repo.

# GitHub Skill

Use the `gh` CLI to interact with GitHub. Always specify `--repo owner/repo` when not in a git directory, or use URLs directly.

## Pull Requests

Check CI status on a PR:
```bash
gh pr checks 55 --repo owner/repo
```

List recent workflow runs:
```bash
gh run list --repo owner/repo --limit 10
```

View a run and see which steps failed:
```bash
gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo
```

View logs for failed steps only:
```bash
gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo --log-failed
```

### Debugging a CI Failure

Follow this sequence to investigate a failing CI run:

1. **Check PR status** — identify which checks are failing:
   ```bash
   gh pr checks 55 --repo owner/repo
   ```
2. **List recent runs** — find the relevant run ID:
   ```bash
   gh run list --repo owner/repo --limit 10
   ```
3. **View the failed run** — see which jobs and steps failed:
   ```bash
   gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo
   ```
4. **Fetch failure logs** — get the detailed output for failed steps:
   ```bash
   gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo --log-failed
   ```

## API for Advanced Queries

The `gh api` command is useful for accessing data not available through other subcommands.

Get PR with specific fields:
```bash
gh api repos/owner/repo/pulls/55 --jq '.title, .state, .user.login'
```

## JSON Output

Most commands support `--json` for structured output. You can use `--jq` to filter:

```bash
gh issue list --repo owner/repo --json number,title --jq '.[] | "\(.number): \(.title)"'
```
