dependency-updater — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
A skill that detects your project type, applies safe dependency updates on its own and asks before touching major versions.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill development/dependency-updaterWhat dependency-updater does
The skill scans your project for package files (package.json, go.mod, Cargo.toml, requirements.txt and others) and works out which package manager is in play. Then it checks whether the tools it needs are installed and suggests an install command when one is missing.
Updates are split by kind. Patches and minor versions go in automatically. Major versions are prompted one at a time, with the current and new version shown side by side. Pinned versions without ^ or ~ are left alone, since someone pinned them on purpose. Once updates land, the skill runs the install command and a security audit.
There is a diagnosis mode for version conflicts, unsatisfied peer dependencies, duplicate packages and unused deps. On Node.js it leans on taze and npm audit; Python uses pip-review and pip-audit; Go uses go get -u and govulncheck. If taze is missing, the scan step fails, so don't skip the prerequisite check.
What it helps with
- update project dependencies without sorting versions by hand
- list outdated packages and group them by update type
- repair a broken dependency tree after a version conflict
- run a security audit and surface vulnerable packages
- strip duplicate and unused dependencies from a bundle
Example prompts for the agent
- update my dependencies
- check for outdated packages
- fix my dependency problems
