creative-writing-modes — Claude Code skill: prose modes
A skill that adds five prose modes to your writing pass: fresh draft, revision, bridge, alternate take and line polish. Useful once structure is settled and the page needs words.
npx skills add haowjy/creative-writing-skills --skill creative-writing-modes -a claude-codeWhat creative-writing-modes does
The skill sits on top of /llm-writing and loads when prose has to go on the page. It adds the creative layer: story pressure, voice, rhythm, omission, ambiguity, genre promise and reader simulation.
Five modes are inside. Fresh draft writes new prose from a brief, outline, style and canon. Revision changes an existing draft from author direction or critique. Bridge connects scenes, compresses time or shifts register. Alternate take tests a different execution of the same beat. Line polish fixes rhythm and texture after structure settles. Pick the smallest mode that fits, and read only the matching section in resources/prose-modes.md unless the prompt asks for a hybrid pass.
Style and character state load before writing a character. If the request contradicts that state, the skill writes to the request, notes the contradiction and leaves the state alone. Planning and review live elsewhere: /story-planning comes before there is a page to write, while /story-review, /reader-sim and continuity checking handle judgement. Genre is craft guidance rather than a prose mode, so genre expectations pull in /creative-writing-craft.
What it helps with
- draft a scene from a brief and outline
- revise a passage from author notes
- connect two scenes and compress the time between them
- try a different execution of the same beat
- polish rhythm and precision after the structure settles
Example prompts for the agent
- write a fresh draft of this scene from my outline and style
- revise this passage based on my notes
- bridge these two scenes and compress the transition

Questions about creative-writing-modes
How do I install creative-writing-modes in Claude?
Run npx skills add haowjy/creative-writing-skills --skill creative-writing-modes -a claude-code. The skill file then lives at ~/.claude/skills/creative-writing-modes/SKILL.md.
What does creative-writing-modes do?
It adds a creative-writing layer to /llm-writing with five modes: fresh draft, revision, bridge, alternate take and line polish.

It only writes prose. Planning before a page exists is /story-planning, and judging a finished draft is /story-review or /reader-sim.

--- name: creative-writing-modes type: mode-shift description: > Creative-writing addendum to /llm-writing. Load when putting prose on the page: draft, revise, bridge, vary, or polish. model-invocable: true --- # Creative Writing Modes Load `/llm-writing` if it is not already loaded. This skill adds the creative-writing layer for putting prose on the page: story pressure, voice, rhythm, omission, ambiguity, genre promise, and reader simulation. Use the smallest mode that fits the task. Read only the matching section in `resources/prose-modes.md` unless the prompt explicitly asks for a hybrid pass. Load style and character state before writing a character. If the request contradicts character state, write to the request, note the contradiction, and do not update character state. ## Prose Modes - **Fresh draft** — new prose from a brief, outline, style, character state, and canon. - **Revision** — change an existing draft from author direction or critique. - **Bridge / connective tissue** — connect scenes, compress time, or shift register. - **Alternate take** — test a meaningfully different execution of the same beat. - **Line polish** — improve rhythm, precision, and texture after structure settles. ## Genre Resources Genre is craft guidance, not a prose mode. When genre expectations shape the pass, load `/creative-writing-craft` and the relevant resource under `resources/genre/` there. ## Boundary This is not a planning or review skill. Use `/story-planning` before there is a page to write. Use `/story-review`, `/reader-sim`, and continuity checking when the page needs judgment. Return here when the next step is to write the prose.
