build-dashboard · openai — Claude skill: dashboards from your data
A Claude and Claude skill that builds a dashboard from your data sources: metrics, filters, source checks.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill build-dashboard -a codexWhat build-dashboard does
The skill kicks in when you need a dashboard, not a report or a one-off chat analysis. It starts with the brief: who reads it, what gets measured, where it should live. Then it picks a delivery surface — a connected BI tool, sites-app, or portable HTML. Streamlit only if you ask for it.
Before rendering, it hunts for sources: it walks connected databases, pulls fresh catalog and metadata, and compares overlapping tables by freshness, grain and definition. If a required source of truth is missing, that path stops — the skill tells you what it needs and won't swap in a weaker substitute. Worth knowing before you start: no data access, no dashboard.
Specifications for each surface ship inside: BI platform, MCP artifact, HTML, Streamlit. The skill also owns QA and handoff. Two neighbours help out — $create-data-context for the semantic layer, $analyze-data-quality when metrics disagree.
What it helps with
- build a dashboard for monitoring product metrics
- pick the right source when two catalogs disagree
- check table freshness and grain before publishing numbers
- ship a portable HTML dashboard without a BI platform
- trace why report metrics don't add up
Example prompts for the agent
- Build a dashboard for revenue and active users from our Postgres tables
- I need a weekly review dashboard: metrics, region filters, data quality checks
- Make a portable HTML dashboard for orders, we don't have BI

Questions about build-dashboard
How do I install build-dashboard in Claude?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill build-dashboard, then npx skills add openai/plugins --skill build-dashboard -a codex. The skill lands in .agents/skills/build-dashboard/SKILL.md.
What does build-dashboard do?
It builds a dashboard from your sources: defines the brief and metrics, discovers and validates data, picks a delivery surface, runs QA and hands off the result.
Which data sources does it support?
Connected BI tools, MCP servers and other callable tools. If a required source of truth is unavailable, the skill stops that path and asks you to make it available.
