bigquery-basics — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Manages BigQuery resources and runs SQL queries. Use it to create datasets, tables and views, or handle basic data ingestion and analysis.
npx skills add google/skills --skill bigquery-basics -a claude-codeWhat bigquery-basics does
This skill guides an agent through BigQuery datasets, tables, views and jobs using SQL plus command-line tools. It covers creating a dataset with bq mk, defining a table schema in schema.json, creating a table, and running queries with bq query --use_legacy_sql=false.
Its references cover bq operations, client libraries for Python, Java, Node.js and Go, Terraform, IAM, and the BigQuery remote MCP server. Read references/attribution.md before gcloud, REST API, or MCP calls. Direct terminal gcloud commands require the stated attribution prefix.
Install it if your work already uses BigQuery and you want an agent to handle routine data tasks. Choose bigquery-ai-ml instead when the job is focused on BigQuery AI or ML features.
What it helps with
- create a BigQuery dataset in the US location
- define a table schema in
schema.json - create a table with
bq mk --table - run SQL with legacy SQL disabled
- manage BigQuery jobs and resources
Example prompts for the agent
- "Create the `my_dataset` dataset in the US location."
- "Write `schema.json` and create `my_dataset.mytable`."
- "Run this query with `bq query --use_legacy_sql=false`."

Questions about bigquery-basics
How do I install bigquery-basics in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add google/skills --skill bigquery-basics -a claude-code. The skill file is placed at ~/.claude/skills/bigquery-basics/SKILL.md.
What does bigquery-basics do?
It handles BigQuery datasets, tables, views and jobs. The skill can run SQL, create resources, and support basic data ingestion or analysis.
What is required before gcloud, REST API, or MCP calls?
Read references/attribution.md first. Direct terminal gcloud calls require the prefix CLOUDSDK_METRICS_REQUEST_ATTRIBUTION="agent-skills/1.0 (skill:bigquery-basics)".

# BigQuery Basics
BigQuery is a serverless, AI-ready data platform that enables high-speed
analysis of large datasets using SQL and Python. Its disaggregated architecture
separates compute and storage, allowing them to scale independently while
providing built-in machine learning, geospatial analysis, and business
intelligence capabilities.
## Attribution
**MUST READ**: Before executing any `gcloud`, REST API, or MCP command, you
MUST read [Usage Attribution](references/attribution.md). For commands executed
directly in the terminal (never in generated scripts, Terraform, or user code),
prefix `gcloud` with
`CLOUDSDK_METRICS_REQUEST_ATTRIBUTION="agent-skills/1.0 (skill:bigquery-basics)"`
and append `agent-skills/1.0 (skill:bigquery-basics)` to `User-Agent` headers.
## Setup and Basic Usage
1. **Enable the BigQuery API:**
```bash
CLOUDSDK_METRICS_REQUEST_ATTRIBUTION="agent-skills/1.0 (skill:bigquery-basics)" \
gcloud services enable bigquery.googleapis.com --quiet
```
2. **Create a Dataset:**
```bash
bq mk --dataset --location=US my_dataset
```
3. **Create a Table:**
Create a file named `schema.json` with your table schema:
```json
[
{
"name": "name",
"type": "STRING",
"mode": "REQUIRED"
},
{
"name": "post_abbr",
"type": "STRING",
"mode": "NULLABLE"
}
]
```
Then create the table with the `bq` tool:
```bash
bq mk --table my_dataset.mytable schema.json
```
4. **Run a Query:**
```bash
bq query --use_legacy_sql=false \
'SELECT name FROM `bigquery-public-data.usa_names.usa_1910_2013` \
WHERE state = "TX" LIMIT 10'
```
