competitor-analysis · aj-geddes — Claude Code skill: competitive landscape
A skill that walks the agent through competitor research: direct and indirect players, a comparison matrix, SWOT, and a findings report. Useful before pricing or positioning calls.
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill competitor-analysis -a claude-codeWhat competitor-analysis does
The skill gives the agent a method for competitive research. It sorts players into four buckets: direct, indirect, adjacent, and emerging. From there it moves to a comparison matrix, a SWOT, and a competitive insights report.
Four reference guides sit in the references/ directory: competitor identification, competitive matrix, SWOT analysis, and the insights report. The quick-start example shows a CompetitorAnalysis class with competitor types and a method that finds players in a market segment. Full implementations live in the guides, so the skill supplies structure rather than a ready script.
The best-practices section is blunt about failure modes: don't copy competitor features blindly, and don't rewrite strategy after every move they make. If all you wanted was a feature table, this skill hands you more than you asked for. It also advises refreshing the analysis quarterly.
What it helps with
- sort market players into direct, indirect and adjacent groups
- build a feature and pricing comparison matrix
- run a SWOT on a specific product
- assess the threat from new entrants
- write a findings report for product strategy
Example prompts for the agent
- analyze competitors in the online course segment and build a comparison matrix
- run a SWOT for our product using this market data
- which emerging players threaten our position and why

Questions about competitor-analysis
How do I install competitor-analysis in Claude?
Run npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill competitor-analysis -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md.
What does competitor-analysis do?
It groups competitors, builds a comparison matrix and a SWOT, and produces a findings report for product strategy and positioning.
How is it different from just asking the agent?
It imposes a structure: four guides in references/ cover identification, the matrix, SWOT, and the final report. A do-and-don't list keeps the analysis from drifting.
