pcf-tooling — GitHub Copilot rule: Power Platform CLI for PCF
A rule that tells Copilot to use Microsoft Power Platform CLI for building, debugging and deploying Power Apps code components.
.github/instructions/pcf-tooling.instructions.mdWhat pcf-tooling does
The rule applies to *.ts, *.tsx, *.js, *.json, *.xml, *.pcfproj and *.csproj files. Inside is a short instruction: create, debug and deploy code components with Microsoft Power Platform CLI instead of doing it by hand. Two links follow — one for installing the CLI, one for the Power Apps component framework training path.
The catch is stated up front: deploying a code component through the CLI requires a Microsoft Dataverse environment with system administrator or system customizer privileges. No such environment, no deploy. Worth checking your access before wiring anything up.
The rule itself installs nothing and runs nothing. It is guidance text for the agent. You still install Microsoft Power Platform CLI yourself from the linked docs.
What it helps with
- scaffold a Power Apps code component without hand-rolling templates
- debug a component before pushing it to an environment
- deploy a code component to Dataverse from the CLI
- tell the agent which files belong to a PCF project
- check privileges before a deploy
Example prompts for the agent
- Help me create my first code component with Microsoft Power Platform CLI
- How do I deploy this component to Dataverse?
- Check that the project has everything needed to build the PCF component

Questions about pcf-tooling
How do I install pcf-tooling in GitHub Copilot?
Copy the rule file to .github/instructions/pcf-tooling.instructions.md in your repository. Copilot picks it up for files matching the applyTo pattern.
What does pcf-tooling do?
It instructs the agent to work with Power Apps code components through Microsoft Power Platform CLI: create, debug, deploy. It also links to the CLI install docs.
What do I need to deploy a code component?
A Microsoft Dataverse environment plus system administrator or system customizer privileges. Without them the CLI deploy will not go through.

# Get Tooling for Power Apps Component Framework
Use Microsoft Power Platform CLI (command-line interface) to create, debug, and deploy code components using Power Apps component framework. Microsoft Power Platform CLI enables developers to create code components quickly. In the future, it will be expanded to include support for additional development and application life cycle management (ALM) experiences.
