What rust-analyzer-lsp does

The plugin connects Claude to rust-analyzer, the Rust language server. The agent gets code navigation and error analysis for .rs files.

The server itself is installed separately. With rustup that is rustup component add rust-analyzer; on macOS there is brew install rust-analyzer; on Linux you can use sudo apt install rust-analyzer or sudo pacman -S rust-analyzer. The plugin will not do anything until the binary is on your PATH, so check that rust-analyzer runs from the terminal first.

This is for Rust projects. In a JavaScript or Python repo there is nothing for it to talk to, so skip it.

What it helps with

  • jump to a function definition in an unfamiliar Rust crate
  • list every place a type is used
  • work through compiler errors without leaving the chat
  • check a method signature without opening the docs

Example prompts for the agent

  • Show me where this trait is defined and which types implement it
  • Find every call site of this function
  • Explain the compile error in src/main.rs
