neon — Claude Code plugin: what it does, how to install
Neon's plugin for Claude Code bundles agent skills for Lakebase Postgres with an MCP server that lets the agent touch projects and databases in plain language.
/plugin install neon@claude-plugins-official
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community
/plugin install neon@claude-community
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-officialWhat neon does
The plugin ships Neon's agent skills alongside the Neon MCP Server as one Claude Code package. Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md entry point, scripts and reference material. Claude Code opens it by itself when a task looks like database work and reads further files as needed, so there are no commands to memorise.
The set covers Lakebase Postgres documentation, branching, Neon Auth, Object Storage, Functions, Realtime and the AI Gateway. One skill hunts down wasted egress. Through the MCP server the agent lists projects and databases and edits them from a sentence.
Nothing reaches your Neon data until OAuth finishes: the first MCP call brings up the sign-in prompt. Source sits in neondatabase/agent-skills under Apache-2.0.
What it helps with
- branch a database for a migration test run
- trace a rising data-transfer bill
- wire up login and sessions through Neon Auth
- deploy an HTTP function next to the database
- look up Lakebase Postgres docs without leaving the editor
Example prompts for the agent
- List my Neon projects and branch the main one for a migration test.
- Work out why egress jumped and point at the queries pulling extra rows.
- Deploy a Node.js function that returns the task list from the injected
DATABASE_URL.

Questions about neon
How do I install neon in Claude Code?
Add the marketplace with /plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-official, then install the plugin with /plugin install neon@claude-plugins-official.
What does the neon plugin do?
It packages Neon's agent skills and the Neon MCP Server together. Skills fire on their own when a task matches, and the MCP server gives the agent access to your projects and databases.
What is needed before the MCP tools work?
An OAuth sign-in to Neon, which Claude Code asks for on the first MCP tool call.

Skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that agents can discover and use to do things more accurately and efficiently. Once installed, skills are automatically invoked by the agent upon detection of relevant tasks. It all starts with the `SKILL.md` file in the skill's directory. It's the entry point and allows agents to progressively discover information as needed. ## Available Skills ### Neon [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon) An overview of Neon for apps and agents — Lakebase Postgres, Managed Better Auth, Realtime, Object Storage, Functions, the Data API, and AI Gateway — and how to get started. Includes Claimable Neon for use with no Neon account. ### Neon Postgres [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-postgres) A comprehensive index of documentation and best practices for Lakebase Postgres on Neon, to set your agents up for success. ### Neon Auth [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-auth) Neon Auth (Managed Better Auth) for login, users, and sessions that branch with the database, including which Better Auth plugins are supported and when to run self-managed Better Auth on Neon instead. ### Neon Postgres Agent Platforms [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/neon-for-agent-platforms/neon-postgres-agent-platforms) For agent platforms, codegen tools, and multi-tenant SaaS products that provision and run Lakebase Postgres, Object Storage, Functions, Managed Better Auth, and/or AI Gateway access for their users. Includes a companion skill and samples in [neondatabase/neon-for-agent-platforms](https://github.com/neondatabase/neon-for-agent-platforms). ### Neon Postgres Branches [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-postgres-branches) Choose and create the right Neon branch type for migration testing and isolated development workflows, including schema-only branches for sensitive data and reset-from-parent workflows to quickly realign child branches. ### Neon Postgres Egress Optimizer [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-postgres-egress-optimizer) Diagnose and fix excessive Postgres egress (network data transfer) in a codebase. Use when investigating high database bills, unexpected data transfer costs, or query overfetching. ### Neon Object Storage [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-object-storage) S3-compatible object storage that branches with your Neon project, so files and database rows stay in sync across dev, preview, and production environments. ### Neon AI Gateway [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-ai-gateway) One API and one Neon credential for frontier and open-source LLMs from multiple providers, built into your branch and compatible with the OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vercel AI SDKs. ### Neon Functions [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-functions) Long-running, serverless Node.js HTTP functions deployed onto your Neon branch, with `DATABASE_URL` injected automatically and compute that runs next to your data. ### Neon Realtime [](https://skills.sh/neondatabase/agent-skills/neon-realtime) Neon Realtime makes any SQL query live. Build realtime, reactive apps and agents on Lakebase Postgres, with type-safe live queries and optimistic mutations. ## Installation ```bash npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills ``` ### Agent Plugin The repository root is a portable [Agent Plugins v1](https://agent-plugins.org/specification) package, so any conforming client can install it straight from this repo. The root [`plugin.json`](plugin.json) declares the plugin, [`mcp.json`](mcp.json) declares the [Neon MCP Server](https://mcp.neon.tech), and the skills are the directories under `skills/`. The Claude Code and Cursor packaging under `plugins/` remains available for clients that expect those formats. ### Antigravity Plugin Antigravity reads its Marketplace metadata from [`.antigravity-plugin/plugin.json`](.antigravity-plugin/plugin.json) and its native Neon MCP Server configuration from [`mcp_config.json`](mcp_config.json). Install the plugin from this repository: ```bash agy plugin install https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills ``` Confirm that Antigravity discovered the plugin, its skills, and the MCP server: ```bash agy plugin list ``` To authenticate, run `/mcp` in Antigravity, select the Neon MCP server, and complete the OAuth flow. ### Claude Code Plugin You can also install the skills as a Claude Code plugin, which bundles the Neon agent skills and the [Neon MCP Server](https://mcp.neon.tech) for natural language database management: ``` /plugin marketplace add neondatabase/agent-skills /plugin install neon-postgres@neon ``` After installation, you'll be prompted to authenticate with Neon via OAuth when you first use MCP tools. The top-level `skills/` directory remains the source of truth. Plugin folders ship real copies of the skill directories they expose, regenerated with `npm run sync:plugins` — see [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) for details. ### Cursor Plugin This repository also includes Cursor plugin packaging with the same scope as the Claude plugin (the Neon agent skills and the Neon MCP Server). Run this command in chat: ```text /add-plugin neon-postgres ``` ### Kimi Code Plugin Kimi Code CLI reads its own manifest at [`kimi.plugin.json`](kimi.plugin.json), which points at the skills under `skills/` and declares the [Neon MCP Server](https://mcp.neon.tech). Install it from this repo in chat: ```text /plugins install https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills ``` Plugin changes apply to new sessions, so run `/new` afterward. ### Pi You can also install the skills in [Pi](https://pi.dev) from npm: ```bash pi install npm:@neon/skills ``` Or straight from this repo: ```bash pi install git:github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills ``` ## Usage Example prompts: ``` Get started with Neon ``` ``` Recommend a connection method for this project ``` ``` Set up Drizzle ORM with Neon ``` ``` Set up Neon Auth for my Next.js app ``` ``` Query the database using neon-js ``` ``` Create a new Neon branch using the API ``` ``` Use the serverless driver for edge functions ``` ``` Give me a quick temporary Postgres database ``` ``` Why is my Neon bill so high? ```
