What mongodb-atlas does

The plugin routes your agent to the managed server at https://mcp.mongodb.com/. After an OAuth sign-in with your Atlas credentials, Claude Code can read collections, build aggregation pipelines, and manage database users or network access lists directly.

Included skills trigger on demand. They convert plain questions into read-only find queries, diagnose query latency, suggest indexes, and calculate storage overhead for Queryable Encryption. There is also dedicated tooling for Atlas Search, Vector Search, and Stream Processing.

Self-hosted Community or Enterprise Advanced servers will not work with this package. Those require the separate mongodb plugin.

What it helps with

  • diagnose slow database queries and generate index recommendations
  • convert plain text prompts into read-only aggregation pipelines
  • migrate relational database tables into MongoDB document schemas
  • calculate storage and memory growth for Queryable Encryption fields

Example prompts for the agent

  • Explain why queries on the orders collection are slow and recommend an index
  • Generate a read-only aggregation pipeline to calculate monthly churn
  • Set up Vector Search configuration for the embeddings field in products

Questions about mongodb-atlas

How to install mongodb-atlas in Claude Code?

First add the official repository by running /plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-official. Next, install the package with /plugin install mongodb-atlas@claude-plugins-official.

What does mongodb-atlas do?

It connects Claude Code directly to Atlas clusters through a hosted MCP server. The agent can then explore collections, run queries, adjust indexes, and manage project permissions.

Can I use this plugin with a self-managed MongoDB instance?

No, it connects exclusively to MongoDB Atlas over OAuth. If you run Community Edition or Enterprise Advanced on your own infrastructure, install the mongodb plugin instead.

# MongoDB Atlas (Managed MCP)

Connects your agent to **MongoDB Atlas** clusters through MongoDB's hosted Atlas MCP server (`https://mcp.mongodb.com/`) over OAuth — sign in with your Atlas account and skip the local setup and connection strings entirely. From there, your agent can explore databases and collections, run queries and aggregations, manage indexes, and manage Atlas resources such as clusters, projects, database users, and network access.

Running a deployment you manage yourself — Community, Enterprise Advanced, self-hosted? Use the [`mongodb` plugin](../mongodb/README.md) instead.

To get started, see the [repository README](../../README.md).

## Skills

These skills come bundled with the plugin and activate automatically when relevant:

- **`mongodb-connection`** — Reviews and tunes client connection configuration (pools, timeouts, patterns) across driver languages.
- **`mongodb-natural-language-querying`** — Turns natural-language requests into read-only `find` queries and aggregation pipelines.
- **`mongodb-qe-size-estimation`** — Estimates the storage and memory impact of encrypting fields in collections with Queryable Encryption (QE) enabled. Doesn't apply to collections that use Client-Side Field Level Encryption (CSFLE).
- **`mongodb-query-optimizer`** — Diagnoses slow queries and recommends indexes to fix them.
- **`mongodb-schema-design`** — Applies MongoDB schema design patterns and steers you clear of common anti-patterns, whether modeling from scratch or migrating from SQL.
- **`mongodb-search-and-ai`** — Helps build Atlas Search (full-text), Vector Search (semantic), and hybrid search implementations.
- **`mongodb-atlas-stream-processing`** — Manages Atlas Stream Processing workspaces, connections, and processors for streaming workloads.
