grafana-cloud-mcp — Claude Code plugin for Grafana Cloud observability
Wires your agent into the hosted Grafana Cloud MCP server, so you can run PromQL, LogQL and TraceQL queries, handle alerts and incidents from the chat. Nothing to install locally.
/plugin install grafana-cloud-mcp@claude-plugins-official
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-officialWhat grafana-cloud-mcp does
This plugin points Claude at Grafana Cloud's hosted MCP server. It ships the grafana-cloud-mcp-tools skill and reuses the same server and sign-in as the Grafana Cloud connector. Over sixty tools are exposed: dashboards, datasources, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Pyroscope, ClickHouse, CloudWatch, Elasticsearch, alerting, incidents, OnCall, Sift, annotations, deeplink generation and panel rendering to PNG.
There is no local install and no environment variables to set. On the first connection the agent asks for your Grafana Cloud URL and opens a browser for OAuth 2.1 authorization. The token lasts 1 hour and refreshes on its own for 30 days.
Before you start you need a Grafana Cloud account, an administrator who has accepted the Grafana Assistant terms, and either the Assistant Cloud MCP User role or the grafana-assistant-app.cloud-mcp:access permission — Editor and above carry it by default. Self-hosted Grafana is a different story: reach for grafana-mcp instead. On claude.ai, Claude Desktop or mobile, add the Grafana Cloud connector at https://mcp.grafana.com/mcp under Customize → Connectors.
What it helps with
- run a PromQL query against Prometheus without leaving the editor
- hunt down errors in Loki with LogQL
- inspect a slow trace in Tempo
- create or edit an alert rule
- export a dashboard panel as a PNG
Example prompts for the agent
- List the dashboards in Grafana Cloud and find the one covering API latency
- Ask Prometheus how many 5xx responses came in over the last hour
- Search Loki for checkout service errors and group them by message

# Grafana Cloud MCP Plugin that connects AI agents to the hosted [Grafana Cloud MCP server](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana-cloud/machine-learning/assistant/configure/cloud-mcp/) for AI-assisted observability workflows. The Cloud MCP server is fully hosted and uses OAuth 2.1 authorization — no local installation or service account tokens required. **Using claude.ai, Claude Desktop, mobile, or Cowork?** Add the Grafana Cloud connector (`https://mcp.grafana.com/mcp`) under [**Customize → Connectors**](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors) (on Team or Enterprise, an Owner adds it under [**Organization settings → Connectors**](https://claude.ai/admin-settings/connectors)). This plugin uses the same server and sign-in, and adds the `grafana-cloud-mcp-tools` skill — install it as well as the connector where plugins are supported, and you'll see one set of tools, not two. ## Prerequisites 1. A **Grafana Cloud** account. Self-hosted users should use the [grafana-mcp](../grafana-mcp/) plugin instead. 2. An administrator must accept the Grafana Assistant terms and conditions. 3. You need the **Assistant Cloud MCP User** role or the `grafana-assistant-app.cloud-mcp:access` permission. Users with **Editor** role or higher have this by default. ## Setup No local installation or environment variables required. When your AI agent first connects, you'll be prompted to enter your Grafana Cloud URL and authorize the connection in your browser. Your OAuth token is valid for 1 hour and refreshes automatically for 30 days. ## Available tools The Cloud MCP server provides 60+ tools across these categories: | Category | Examples | | ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | | Dashboards | search, get summary, get property, update | | Datasources | list, get by UID or name | | Prometheus | PromQL queries, metric metadata, label names/values | | Loki | LogQL log/metric queries, label metadata, patterns | | Tempo | TraceQL queries, attribute discovery (proxied from datasource) | | Pyroscope | profile queries, label names/values, profile types | | ClickHouse | list tables, describe table, SQL queries | | CloudWatch | namespaces, metrics, dimensions, queries | | Elasticsearch | Lucene and Query DSL searches | | Alerting | list/create/update alert rules, routing, contact points | | Incidents | search, create, add activity | | OnCall | schedules, shifts, on-call users, alert groups | | Sift | investigations, analyses, error patterns, slow requests | | Annotations | get, create, update, list tags | | Navigation | generate deeplinks to dashboards, panels, Explore | | Rendering | export dashboard panels as PNG images | | Other | ask_assistant, describe_infrastructure, get_assertions | See the [Grafana Cloud MCP documentation](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana-cloud/machine-learning/assistant/configure/cloud-mcp/) for the full tool reference.
