fakechat — Claude Code plugin: chat testing and setup
A local web chat for testing Claude Code channel notifications. Browser messages reach the session, and assistant replies return to the same thread.
/plugin install fakechat@claude-plugins-official
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-officialWhat fakechat does
fakechat runs a local, iMessage-style web interface for checking the Claude Code channel contract without an external service. Text entered in the browser is sent to the active session, while the assistant reply appears in the thread. On startup, the server prints an address such as http://localhost:8787 to stderr.
The plugin includes reply for sending text and optional files to the UI, plus edit_message for changing a sent message in place. Incoming images and files are saved under ~/.claude/channels/fakechat/inbox/; outbound files are copied to outbox/ and served over HTTP. Set FAKECHAT_PORT to use another port.
Restart the session with --channels plugin:fakechat@claude-plugins-official after installation, or the server will not connect. There is no history or search, and each browser reload starts a fresh view. Access control is absent.
What it helps with
- test message delivery through a Claude Code channel
- send a session reply to a local web chat
- attach a file to an outbound message
- edit a previously sent chat message
- save an inbound attachment to the inbox
Example prompts for the agent

- Send
/tmp/report.pdfto the chat as an attachment. - Edit the latest local chat message with
edit_message.

# fakechat Simple UI for testing the channel contract without an external service. Open a browser, type, messages go to your Claude Code session, replies come back. ## Setup These are Claude Code commands — run `claude` to start a session first. Install the plugin: ``` /plugin install fakechat@claude-plugins-official ``` **Relaunch with the channel flag** — the server won't connect without this. Exit your session and start a new one: ```sh claude --channels plugin:fakechat@claude-plugins-official ``` The server prints the URL to stderr on startup: ``` fakechat: http://localhost:8787 ``` Open it. Type. The assistant replies in-thread. Set `FAKECHAT_PORT` to change the port. ## Tools | Tool | Purpose | | --- | --- | | `reply` | Send to the UI. Takes `text`, optionally `reply_to` (message ID) and `files` (absolute path, 50MB). Attachment shows as `[filename]` under the text. | | `edit_message` | Edit a previously-sent message in place. | Inbound images/files save to `~/.claude/channels/fakechat/inbox/` and the path is included in the notification. Outbound files are copied to `outbox/` and served over HTTP. ## Not a real channel There's no history, no search, no access.json, no skill. Single browser tab, fresh on every reload. This is a dev tool, not a messaging bridge.
