team-knowledge-mapper — Claude Code command: map team skills
A slash command that builds a skill matrix for your team, finds knowledge gaps and suggests learning paths. Useful before planning hires or training.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command team/team-knowledge-mapperWhat team-knowledge-mapper does
The command reads git commit history from the last three months, sees who touched what, and lines that up against the project stack. You get a competency matrix per person, a list of critical gaps, and a read on how concentrated knowledge is. It also estimates bus factor: if only one person is active on a technology, that is worth checking before their vacation.
Four modes run through an argument: --skill-matrix, --knowledge-gaps, --expertise-areas, --learning-paths. The first builds the matrix, the second hunts for holes, the third breaks down who owns what, the fourth proposes training and mentorship. There is also a cross-training block: who to pair with whom so knowledge does not sit with one person.
The command uses Read, Bash, Glob and Grep, so it needs access to a repository with git history. No commits means nothing to analyze. Output is a text report, not charts, so you build the visuals yourself.
What it helps with
- build a skill matrix for team members
- spot critical competency gaps before hiring
- estimate bus factor on key technologies
- draft a training and mentorship plan
- plan cross-training and knowledge rotation
Example prompts for the agent
- /team-knowledge-mapper --skill-matrix
- /team-knowledge-mapper --knowledge-gaps
- /team-knowledge-mapper --learning-paths
