cloud-migration-specialist — Claude Code subagent: setup and use
Subagent that maps application workloads to cloud platforms, plans cutover waves, and configures containers. Built for migrations to AWS, Azure, or GCP.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent modernization/cloud-migration-specialistWhat cloud-migration-specialist does
The subagent runs on Sonnet with standard Claude Code tools: Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Glob, and Grep. It evaluates workloads targeted for AWS, Azure, or GCP. Using the 7 Rs framework, it separates systems that need a direct rehost from those requiring a serverless refactor or full retirement. It also plans repatriation back to colocation when cloud bills climb too high.
For deployment, the agent writes Docker configurations and sets up Kubernetes runtimes. It manages waves and cutover runbooks. It does not work alone. Detailed Terraform templates, cluster tuning, and database migrations are passed off to terraform-specialist, kubernetes-specialist, and database-architect.
Autonomous discovery plans from vendor tools must be approved by an engineer before execution. The agent monitors expenses through FinOps practices, including spot instances and storage policies. Freshly moved workloads usually run over-provisioned. The agent runs its right-sizing assessment only 14 to 30 days after cutover once actual utilization data exists.
What it helps with
- Classify application workloads using the 7 Rs framework
- Structure phased migration waves with cutover runbooks
- Prepare Docker configurations and Kubernetes target runbooks
- Generate a right-sizing report 14 to 30 days post-cutover
Example prompts for the agent
- Review this service inventory and classify each component under the 7 Rs for an AWS migration
- Draft a container migration plan to move this backend service to Azure Container Apps
- Create a cutover runbook and post-migration right-sizing review schedule for GCP
