The problem you cannot see in a browser
Take a site built on a JavaScript framework: the content is assembled in the visitor's browser, while search and AI bots that do not run scripts get an empty page. The workaround used by services such as Profound is simple — detect the bot by its user-agent and serve it a pre-rendered copy: plain HTML with the text already in place, no JavaScript.
It sounds like a reasonable compromise. The question is what happens when the two versions of a page — one for humans, one for bots — drift apart.
The test
A test site was built with exactly this kind of content swap, and the bot copy was compared against the page a regular visitor sees. The text matched almost word for word. Almost — because the price in the bot copy was still the old one.
That is the core risk of the approach. The page for people works correctly, so the error stays invisible. You learn about it last, when users or customers who arrived via a neural network's answer flag it for you.
Why it matters
If an AI assistant quotes the rendered copy with the outdated price, the buyer sees a figure the site no longer shows. They arrive expecting one number and get another. The gap between the AI's answer and reality damages trust in the brand, and the cause is hard to trace — the visitor-facing page itself is not at fault.
The desync does not come from bad intent. It is built into the architecture: two versions of the content are updated separately, and nobody guarantees they stay identical.
What it means for operators using this setup
If a site serves substituted content to AI bots and search engines, checking the human-facing page is not enough — it will look fine even when it is not. The bot's copy needs to be compared against the live version on a regular basis, rather than assuming the rendering stays in sync by default.
Price is just the most obvious point of failure. The same logic applies to anything that changes often: stock availability, promo terms, delivery times. The more dynamic the content, the faster a rendered bot copy can go stale before anyone notices.
