Search engines now answer queries directly in results. AI-generated overviews in Google, snippet answers and voice search remove traffic from pages even when they rank first. This shift from traditional search engine optimization to answer engine optimization — AEO — is not replacing SEO but reshaping how visibility works.
SEO focuses on ranking in search results; the goal is the click. AEO targets being the source that AI systems pull from when answering a user's question directly on the results page. Both depend on quality, factual content, but they demand different emphasis. Where SEO favored a call-to-action at the end of an article, AEO requires a clear answer in the opening paragraphs.
The formats differ by query type. Transactional queries benefit from comparison tables; informational queries need structured text with data and definitions; local queries require addresses and hours. Technical fundamentals remain: fast load times, mobile optimization and structured markup. Schema.org markup helps AI interpret content correctly.
Ranking on the first page of search results remains the entry point. Without that position, AI systems do not see you. After that, the question becomes whether your data and structure fit what the algorithm chooses to display in answers. Content that works for SEO adapts to AEO more easily than the reverse.
