Google AI Mode sends 57% of product links to Google Shopping: Study

Google AI Mode directs 57% of all product links to Google Shopping, its own service. Nearly half of product answers contain links exclusively to Google's pages, with no mention of third-party retailers.

This shifts the economics of e-commerce. Where organic search once drove traffic to online stores, AI Mode now filters it through its own storefront. Fashion and beauty categories show the highest concentration of Google Shopping links.

For traffic arbitrage, the implications are material. AI Mode intercepts clicks before users see traditional search results. If a neural network answer includes product cards from Google Shopping, the likelihood of a click-through to an external site falls. Traffic pools in a closed ecosystem, where Google monetises it through its own ad platform rather than organic links to partner sites.

For operators relying on SEO-driven product traffic, the 57% figure represents potential clicks that do not reach their properties. The conversion funnel narrows before users even arrive. Affiliate arbitrage built on organic search assumes users click from results to external sites—a chain AI Mode breaks by presenting answers and product listings within Google's interface.

Adaptation runs through diversification. Direct traffic, paid channels, CPA networks with owned audiences—sources where Google does not control the funnel. Organic search in product verticals carries rising risk. Retailers and arbitrageurs who do not shift allocation now face a shrinking share of traffic with no easy path to reclaim it as AI Mode integrates deeper into search.
