Organic traffic is down, but it’s not all AI

Our write-up of a story first reported by Search Engine Land

Organic traffic is down, but it’s not all AI

The data

Analysis of 10,000 websites confirms organic traffic is falling. The decline is uneven: some markets lose more, others hold steady. Artificial intelligence affects search results, but it is only part of the picture.

Variation by market and vertical

Traffic drops at different rates depending on industry. Sites in some verticals lose positions faster than others. Geography matters too: individual markets maintain volume while others decline.

Project size also determines the trajectory. Large properties and small sites experience the drop differently.

AI's role in traffic shifts

Search engines are integrating generative models into results. This changes user behaviour: some queries are resolved directly on the results page, without a click-through. But AI is not the only cause.

Algorithms update constantly. Competition for top positions grows. Commercial queries migrate into paid blocks. All of this pressures organic alongside the spread of AI answers.

Where to look for causes

If traffic dropped, check three things:

  • Algorithm updates — Google and Yandex regularly change ranking, especially for commercial and informational queries
  • SERP features — rich snippets, People Also Ask blocks, product cards take clicks
  • Competitors — new entrants or strengthened incumbents can push you out of top positions

Only then look at AI. Generative answers still affect traffic selectively, mainly on informational queries with simple answers.

How to adapt

Relying on one channel no longer works. Organic remains an important source, but depending on it alone is risky.

Diversify traffic. Build paid channels: search ads, social, programmatic. Test arbitrage if your vertical allows it. Consider email and push if you have a base.

Strengthen content. AI answers compete with simple articles. Provide depth: expertise, case studies, data a model will not produce in one query. Solve complex user problems, not just answer questions.

Track metrics by segment. Do not look at overall traffic — break down by category, query type, device. The decline may be local, and then the solution is simpler.

Takeaway

Organic traffic is falling across thousands of sites. Pace and scale vary by vertical, geography, project size. AI affects results, but works in combination with other factors: algorithm updates, rising competition, changes to search interface.

Relying on SEO alone is no longer viable. You need a multi-channel strategy and content that AI cannot replace.
