Google's AI Mode puts AI answers straight into the search results. The user gets a written response built from indexed sources instead of a list of links. It runs as a separate feature inside Google Search and now carries its own interface.
At Google I/O in May 2026, Sundar Pichai called AI Mode 'our biggest upgrade to Search ever'. He said the mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users. That takes it out of experiment territory.
What it changes for traffic
An answer served on Google's own page removes the click that used to go to a site. Informational queries are the exposed end: if the response is already on screen, the visit does not happen, and the ad or affiliate revenue tied to that visit goes with it. Commercial and transactional queries still send the user somewhere.
For affiliate and SEO teams the question is which queries in their niche AI Mode closes by itself. Where it does, the entry point shifts to branded and long-tail terms that still need a click.
