rendercv — Claude Code skill: build a CV in YAML, render to PDF
This skill teaches your agent to write and edit a RenderCV YAML file and render it to PDF, PNG, HTML and Markdown through Typst. Handy when a resume needs re-typesetting for a specific job.
npx skills add rendercv/rendercv-skill --skill rendercv -a claude-codeWhat rendercv does
The skill covers RenderCV v2.8. You keep the resume content in YAML, and RenderCV turns it into a PDF typeset with Typst. The agent knows the four-section layout — cv, design, locale, settings — so it can fill the file in for you or fix an existing one. Only cv is required; the rest fall back to defaults.
Six themes ship with it: classic, harvard, engineeringresumes, engineeringclassic, sb2nov, moderncv. Locales are built in too, 22 of them, and any of them can be overridden. Colors, fonts, margins, section title styles and entry layouts are all set in the YAML. Sections under cv.sections are a dictionary where the key becomes the heading, and every entry in one section has to be the same type.
RenderCV itself installs separately — the skill does not replace it: uv tool install "rendercv[full]". Then rendercv new scaffolds a starter file and rendercv render builds the documents. There is a --watch mode that re-renders on every YAML change, plus flags like --dont-generate-pdf when you only want a PNG. Design and locale can live in their own files and load via --design and --locale-catalog, which pays off when several resumes share one layout. If your project does not use uv, swap the install line for whatever you do use.
What it helps with
- turn a YAML file into a finished PDF resume
- re-typeset a CV for a specific job without rewriting the text
- share one layout across several resumes via a separate
design.yaml - export a resume to Markdown or HTML for a personal site
- check the page count from a PNG preview
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a starter YAML for a resume for Jane Doe with the moderncv theme and the german locale
- Render
Jane_Doe_CV.yamlto PDF and tell me how many pages it came out to - Change the section title color and margins in the design, then re-render the resume

Questions about rendercv
How do I install rendercv in Claude?
Run npx skills add rendercv/rendercv-skill --skill rendercv -a claude-code. The skill file then lands at ~/.claude/skills/rendercv/SKILL.md.
What does rendercv do?
It helps the agent write and edit a resume YAML file and render it to PDF, PNG, HTML and Markdown. Typst handles the typesetting, and themes plus locales are configured in that same YAML.
Do I still need to install RenderCV itself?
Yes — the skill only describes the format and commands to the agent. The tool installs on its own with uv tool install "rendercv[full]".
