react-native-app — Claude Code skill: React Native mobile apps
A skill that walks your agent through building cross-platform React Native apps: navigation, state, API calls.
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill react-native-app -a claude-codeWhat react-native-app does
This skill covers building iOS and Android apps from one React Native codebase. It sets out navigation with React Navigation, state management through Redux or Context API, API integration, and handling platform differences. Next to SKILL.md sits a references/ folder with four write-ups: project setup and navigation, Redux state, Axios requests, and functional components with hooks.
The rules are blunt. Functional components with hooks. Error and loading states on every fetch. FlatList for long lists, StyleSheet instead of inline styles, TypeScript for types. API endpoints belong in environment variables, not in the source. Test on both platforms, not just the simulator.
The skill does not scaffold a project or install anything. You need React Native, React Navigation, Redux, Axios and @expo/vector-icons in place first, otherwise the examples in references/ will not run. Worth checking your library versions against the ones in those examples, since the React Navigation API shifts between major releases.
What it helps with
- ship one app to iOS and Android without two codebases
- wire up a stack navigator and bottom tabs
- move screen state into Redux or Context API
- call a backend through Axios with error handling
- split platform-specific code for iOS and Android
Example prompts for the agent
- Build a profile screen in React Native that loads data with Axios and handles loading and error states
- Set up navigation: a stack with Home and Details screens plus bottom tabs
- Move the cart state from local useState to Redux Toolkit

Questions about react-native-app
How do I install react-native-app in Claude?
Run npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill react-native-app -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/react-native-app/SKILL.md.
What does the react-native-app skill do?
It gives the agent React Native patterns for mobile work: navigation, state management, API calls and platform code. The details live in the references/ guides.
Do I need anything installed before using it?
Yes. The examples rely on React Navigation, Redux, Axios and @expo/vector-icons, so those have to be in your project. The skill itself installs no dependencies.

## Overview
Create robust cross-platform mobile applications using React Native with modern development patterns including navigation, state management, API integration, and native module handling.
## When to Use
- Building iOS and Android apps from single codebase
- Rapid prototyping for mobile platforms
- Leveraging web development skills for mobile
- Sharing code between React Native and React Web
- Integrating with native modules and APIs
## Quick Start
Minimal working example:
```javascript
// Navigation with React Navigation
import React from "react";
import { NavigationContainer } from "@react-navigation/native";
import { createNativeStackNavigator } from "@react-navigation/native-stack";
import { createBottomTabNavigator } from "@react-navigation/bottom-tabs";
import { Ionicons } from "@expo/vector-icons";
const Stack = createNativeStackNavigator();
const Tab = createBottomTabNavigator();
function HomeStack() {
return (
<Stack.Navigator
screenOptions={{
headerStyle: { backgroundColor: "#6200ee" },
headerTintColor: "#fff",
headerTitleStyle: { fontWeight: "bold" },
}}
>
<Stack.Screen
name="Home"
component={HomeScreen}
options={{ title: "Home Feed" }}
/>
<Stack.Screen name="Details" component={DetailsScreen} />
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```
## Reference Guides

## Best Practices
### ✅ DO
- Use functional components with React Hooks
- Implement proper error handling and loading states
- Use Redux or Context API for state management
- Leverage React Navigation for routing
- Optimize list rendering with FlatList
- Handle platform-specific code elegantly
- Use TypeScript for type safety
- Test on both iOS and Android
- Use environment variables for API endpoints
- Implement proper memory management
### ❌ DON'T
- Use inline styles excessively (use StyleSheet)
- Make API calls without error handling
- Store sensitive data in plain text
- Ignore platform differences
- Create large monolithic components
- Use index as key in lists
- Make synchronous operations
- Ignore battery optimization
- Deploy without testing on real devices
- Forget to unsubscribe from listeners
