provider-configuration — Claude Code skill for Terraform providers
Guides Terraform provider authentication and credential resolution. Use it when designing a provider schema, wiring Configure(), or investigating missing credentials.
npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill provider-configuration -a claude-codeWhat provider-configuration does
This skill covers authentication setup for providers built with the Terraform Plugin Framework. It explains schema attributes, environment-variable fallbacks, and a credential chain that checks provider configuration, environment variables, a shared credentials file, then platform identity. The chain accepts the first complete credential set; it does not combine a key from one source with a secret from another.
The material also covers unknown-value checks in Configure(), secret redaction, and diagnostics that report why sources were skipped. Authentication attributes should be Optional, and secrets should be Sensitive. Marking credentials Required prevents users from relying on environment variables or a credentials file, so that schema choice changes how the provider can be configured.
What it helps with
- design authentication attributes for a provider schema
- set precedence for credential sources
- diagnose missing or unusable credentials
- handle secrets in
Configure() - test credential resolution
Example prompts for the agent
- Design authentication settings for a Terraform provider using the Plugin Framework.
- Review
Configure()and propose a credential chain with useful diagnostics. - Write tests for credentials from provider configuration, environment variables, and a shared file.

Questions about provider-configuration
How do I install provider-configuration in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add hashicorp/agent-skills --skill provider-configuration -a claude-code. The skill file is at ~/.claude/skills/provider-configuration/SKILL.md.
What does provider-configuration do?
It guides the design of Terraform provider authentication, from schema attributes to credential-source ordering. It also covers secret handling and diagnostics in Configure().
Why should credentials come from a single source?
The skill treats a key and its secret as one complete set. If a source provides only part of the credentials, the chain moves on instead of combining values from different sources.
