What phoenix-evals does

The skill covers evaluator selection, judge models, and pre-built or custom checks in Python and TypeScript. It also includes guidance for datasets, experiments, synthetic data, and batch evaluation of a DataFrame in Python.

Other material walks through error analysis, trace sampling, and validating evaluators against human labels. A Phoenix server is required. Python skills need the phoenix and openai packages; TypeScript skills need @arizeai/phoenix-client.

Install it when you want a documented evaluation workflow, from inspecting failures to production checks. Skip it if your project does not use a Phoenix server.

What it helps with

  • choose what to evaluate in an AI application
  • build a code or LLM evaluator in Python or TypeScript
  • check RAG retrieval and answer faithfulness
  • validate evaluator results against human labels
  • inspect failures and sample traces for review

Example prompts for the agent

  • Help me evaluate my LLM app's responses and choose suitable Phoenix evaluators.
  • Write a Python code evaluator for the failure cases I described.
  • Set up a RAG experiment and show me how to validate its evaluator against human labels.
