nemo-rl-docs — Claude Code skill: NeMo-RL docs conventions
This skill hands your agent the documentation rules for NeMo-RL: keeping docs/index.md current and writing docstrings in Google style. Useful when you touch the docs.
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill nemo-rl-docs -a claude-codeWhat nemo-rl-docs does
The skill spells out how documentation works in the NeMo-RL project. Add a new markdown file under docs/**/*.md or rename one, and the agent updates docs/index.md, placing the document in the section that fits best. Classes and functions get Google style docstrings, which Sphinx can parse.
Comments follow a separate rule. If an interface may be used outside its file, prefer a docstring; comments stay for code inside a function or for interfaces local to a file. When a new feature lands, the agent documents it in whichever file under docs/ matches closest, and creates a new doc plus an docs/index.md entry if nothing fits.
The scope is narrow on purpose. Bug fixes and CI changes need no documentation at all, and the skill stays away from test fixes, dependency bumps, refactoring and performance tuning. That matters if you wire it into a repo-wide workflow: it will keep pulling doc edits into changes that never asked for them.
What it helps with
- add a new markdown file under
docs/and register it indocs/index.md - rename a doc and fix its place in the index
- convert class and function docstrings to Google style
- decide between a docstring and an inline comment
- pick the right file in
docs/for a new feature
Example prompts for the agent
- add docs for the new module under docs/ and update docs/index.md
- rename docs/training.md and fix the index entry
- check the docstrings in this file — are they Google style?

Which tasks is this skill not meant for?
Bug fixes, test fixes, dependency bumps, refactoring, CI/CD changes and performance tuning. Bug fixes and CI changes need no documentation updates at all.

Do NOT use for: bug fixes, test fixes, dependency bumps, refactoring, CI/CD changes, performance tuning, or any task that does not involve writing or updating documentation." when_to_use: Adding or updating documentation; adding a new markdown file; reviewing docstrings; 'docs/index.md', 'docstring format', 'Sphinx', 'where do I add docs', during code review. --- # Documentation Conventions ## Keep docs/index.md Up to Date When a new markdown doc is added under `docs/**/*.md` or a markdown file is renamed, ensure that @docs/index.md is updated and the document appears in the most appropriate section. ## Docstring Format Use [Google style](https://google.github.io/styleguide/pyguide.html) docstrings for classes and functions. These are parseable by Sphinx. For interfaces that may be used outside a file, prefer docstrings over comments. Comments should be reserved for code within a function or interfaces local to a file. ## Document New Features When a new feature is added, update or create documentation in the `docs/` directory that most closely matches the feature. Look at existing docs to find the best fit — if none exists, create a new doc and add it to @docs/index.md. Documentation changes are **not required** for bug fixes or CI-related changes.
