What bootstrap does

This skill turns the agent into a careful Bootstrap developer. It pushes the container → row → col-* structure, the sm, md, lg, xl, xxl breakpoints, and built-in components instead of hand-rolled blocks. Custom CSS is meant to stay minimal.

The rules cover the grid, buttons, modals, alerts, spacing and text utilities, form validation, and accessibility, each with markup examples: a modal with data-bs-dismiss, a form with needs-validation and invalid-feedback, a flex row using d-none d-md-block. Theming goes through Sass variables rather than style overrides.

One thing to know: this is a set of instructions for the agent, not a library. It will not add Bootstrap to your project. And if you already run Tailwind or your own design system, the class advice will fight with it.

What it helps with

  • build a responsive grid without writing custom CSS
  • wire up a modal that closes on a button click
  • show a validation message under a form field
  • replace hand-written styles with Bootstrap utilities
  • theme components through Sass variables

Example prompts for the agent

  • Build a product card with the Bootstrap grid at md and lg breakpoints
  • Create a signup form with validation and an error message under the field
  • Rewrite this block with Bootstrap utilities and drop the custom CSS

How to install bootstrap

1Skills CLI (Vercel)

Questions about bootstrap

How do I install bootstrap in Claude?

Run npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill bootstrap -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/bootstrap/SKILL.md.

What does the bootstrap skill do?

It gives the agent Bootstrap rules for layout: grid and breakpoints, components, utilities, form validation, accessibility. Answers come back as markup examples from those rules.

Do I still need Bootstrap itself in the project?

Yes. The skill only guides the agent; it does not pull the library into your codebase.

# Bootstrap Development

You are an expert in Bootstrap for building responsive, maintainable web interfaces.

## Core Principles

- Write clear, concise, and technical responses with precise Bootstrap examples
- Utilize Bootstrap's components and utilities for responsive, maintainable development
- Prioritize clean coding practices and descriptive class naming
- Minimize custom CSS by leveraging built-in components

## Grid System & Layout

- Leverage Bootstrap's grid system for responsive layouts
- Use container, row, and column classes properly
- Structure content using proper Bootstrap grid classes
- Apply responsive breakpoints (sm, md, lg, xl, xxl)

```html
<div class="container">
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-6 col-lg-4">Column 1</div>
    <div class="col-md-6 col-lg-4">Column 2</div>
    <div class="col-12 col-lg-4">Column 3</div>
  </div>
</div>
```

## Components

### Buttons
```html
<button class="btn btn-primary">Primary</button>
<button class="btn btn-outline-secondary">Secondary</button>
```

### Modals
```html
<div class="modal" tabindex="-1">
  <div class="modal-dialog">
    <div class="modal-content">
      <div class="modal-header">
        <h5 class="modal-title">Title</h5>
        <button type="button" class="btn-close" data-bs-dismiss="modal"></button>
      </div>
      <div class="modal-body">Content</div>
      <div class="modal-footer">
        <button class="btn btn-primary">Save</button>
      </div>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Alerts
```html
<div class="alert alert-success" role="alert">Success message</div>
<div class="alert alert-danger" role="alert">Error message</div>
```

## Utilities

- Apply Bootstrap's utility classes for quick styling adjustments
- Use spacing utilities (m-*, p-*) for margins and padding
- Use text utilities for typography
- Use responsive utilities to control visibility across screen sizes

```html
<div class="d-flex justify-content-between align-items-center p-3 mb-4">
  <span class="text-muted">Text</span>
  <span class="d-none d-md-block">Visible on md+</span>
</div>
```

## Form Validation

- Implement form validation using Bootstrap's built-in styles
- Use Bootstrap's alert component to display error messages clearly
- Structure forms with labels, placeholders, and error messaging

```html
<form class="needs-validation" novalidate>
  <div class="mb-3">
    <label for="email" class="form-label">Email</label>
    <input type="email" class="form-control" id="email" required>
    <div class="invalid-feedback">Please provide a valid email.</div>
  </div>
</form>
```

## Customization

- Customize via Sass variables rather than overriding defaults
- Keep custom styles minimal
- Follow Bootstrap's naming conventions consistently

## Performance

- Include only necessary Bootstrap components
- Use CDN for improved load times
- Optimize images for mobile performance

## Accessibility

- Ensure ARIA attributes are properly used
- Use semantic HTML elements
- Maintain proper color contrast
- Support keyboard navigation
