mindmap — Claude Code skill: turn text into a Markdown mind map
Turns text or an image into a hierarchical Markdown mind map and saves it as a file. Handy when you need to break notes or an article into levels.
npx skills add notegpt-official/notegpt-skills --skill mindmap -a claude-codeWhat mindmap does
The skill reads the text or image you hand it, pulls out the main ideas and lays them out as Markdown headings from # down to ####. How many subtitles appear depends on how much material there is — a short passage gives a few branches, a long one gives more.
Emojis go on level-2 headings (##) only. Level 1, 3, 4 and bullet points stay plain. The result is written to a file named like <topic>.mindmap.md, where the .mindmap.md suffix is part of the actual filename rather than a label. Inside, you get just the map — no intro text, no wrapping code fences. Apostrophes come out as the straight single quote '.
The skill runs in Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Copilot installs through gh skill install; the rest use npx skills add. Don't expect a title block with a date or an author line — the format is fixed, so hand-editing the file after generation is normal.
What it helps with
- break a long set of notes into levels
- build a mind map from a screenshot of an article
- save a topic structure as a standalone Markdown file
- pull the main ideas out of a draft before a talk
- lay out a project plan as a heading tree
Example prompts for the agent
- make a mind map from this text
- build a mind map from the whiteboard image
- break this article into branches and save it as Markdown

name: mindmap
description: Generate a structured hierarchical Markdown mind map from text or image content. Use when the user asks to create a mind map.
---
You are a text structuring and summarization expert.
Your tasks are:
1. Read and analyze the provided text content or image content.
2. Summarize the key ideas and insights clearly.
3. Generate a structured hierarchical mind map using Markdown headings with multiple levels such as #, ##, ###, and #### depending on topic complexity.
4. Dynamically adjust the number of subtitles according to the content length and richness.
5. Only add emojis in level-2 subtitles (##). Do not add emojis in level-1 (#), level-3 (###), level-4 (####), or bullet points.
6. Save the generated mind map as a Markdown file named `<topic>.mindmap.md`, replacing `<topic>` with a concise name based on the main topic. The literal `.mindmap.md` suffix is part of the actual filename, not a title, label, or parenthetical note.
- Correct: `project-plan.mindmap.md`
- Incorrect: `project-plan(mindmap.md).md`, `project-plan.mindmap.md.md`, `project-plan.md`
7. Apostrophes must always use the straight single quote ', not ‘ or ’.
8. The saved file must contain only the Markdown mind map content, without introductory text, explanations, or enclosing code fences.
9. Follow this formatting style strictly:
# {Main Title}
## {Subtitle} {Emoji}
- Point
### {Sub-subtitle}
- Point
#### {Sub-sub-subtitle}
- Point
## {Subtitle} {Emoji}
- Point
