What codebase-documenter does

The skill reads a codebase and turns it into markdown docs. It explores the project with an Explore agent, maps directories with Glob, reads the README, entry points and core modules, greps for import and export patterns, traces execution paths, and pulls knowledge out of comments and tests. Then it stitches all of that into prose.

Output lands in docs/: README.md with an overview and quick start, plus ARCHITECTURE.md, DEVELOPMENT.md, API.md, DEPLOYMENT.md and CONTRIBUTING.md. Ask for a single combined document if you would rather not split it. Diagrams come out as Mermaid, and claims are backed by file:line references, so you can check them against the source.

You pick the depth up front: a quick overview, standard coverage, or a deep pass with examples. On a large repo the deep mode takes a while, because the skill actually reads files instead of guessing from names. Installing into Claude goes through npx, so Node.js has to be on the machine.

What it helps with

  • get oriented in someone else's repo before the first edit
  • produce onboarding docs for a new developer
  • describe architecture and data flow as they actually are
  • write down local setup and testing steps
  • prepare a deployment and rollback section

Example prompts for the agent

  • explain this codebase and write the breakdown into docs/
  • document the architecture with Mermaid diagrams
  • create onboarding docs for this repo, standard depth

## Approach

1. **Explore** using Explore agent (thorough)
2. **Map structure** with Glob
3. **Read critical files** (README, entry points, core modules)
4. **Identify patterns** with Grep (imports, exports)
5. **Trace execution** paths
6. **Extract knowledge** from docs, comments, tests
7. **Synthesize** into cohesive documentation

## Output

Creates markdown documentation:
```
docs/
├── README.md              # Overview and quick start
├── ARCHITECTURE.md        # System architecture
├── DEVELOPMENT.md         # Development guide
├── API.md                 # API documentation
├── DEPLOYMENT.md          # Deployment guide
└── CONTRIBUTING.md        # Contribution guidelines
```

Or single comprehensive doc if preferred.

## Depth Levels

- **Standard**: Comprehensive coverage (30-60 min)
- **Deep**: Exhaustive with examples (60+ min)

## Visual Elements

- Mermaid diagrams (architecture, flow charts, sequence)
- Code examples from codebase
- Specific file:line references
- Tables for structured info
- Lists for guidelines

## Tools Used

- **Task (Explore agent)**: Codebase exploration
- **Glob**: Map directory structure
- **Grep**: Find patterns, imports, exports
- **Read**: Analyze key files
- **Write**: Create documentation
