mapkit — Claude Code skill for Swift maps and location
Guides the agent through MapKit and CoreLocation code in Swift apps: maps, markers, geocoding, routes, geofencing.
npx skills add dpearson2699/swift-ios-skills --skill mapkit -a claude-codeWhat mapkit does
The skill covers Map and MapContentBuilder, markers, annotations, polylines and polygons. For live position it points to CLLocationUpdate.liveUpdates(), for geofences to CLMonitor. There are sections on geocoding, search with autocomplete, and directions.
Two reference files sit inside: references/mapkit-patterns.md for map setup, search, routes, Look Around and snapshots, and references/mapkit-corelocation-patterns.md for the update lifecycle, background location, testing and privacy keys. The agent reads them when a task goes past the basic example.
The target is iOS 17 and later, with some sections marked iOS 18 and iOS 26. Tracking position requires NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription in Info.plist, otherwise the system blocks access. Worth checking before running the examples on a device.
What it helps with
- add a map with markers to a SwiftUI screen
- stream location updates through an async sequence
- set up a geofence and react to region entry
- convert an address to coordinates and back
- calculate a route and draw it as a polyline
Example prompts for the agent
- Add a map to this screen with cafe markers and a user location button
- Track location with CLLocationUpdate.liveUpdates() and cancel the task when the view goes away
- Build place search with autocomplete and show results as markers
