itinerary-optimizer — Claude Code skill: route a multi-stop trip

Builds a day-by-day route for trips with several stops: transfers, reservation windows and slack for whatever comes up. Useful when the plan is packed too tight.

What itinerary-optimizer does

The skill turns a list of places into a schedule. The agent orders the stops, estimates travel time between them, and slots restaurant or activity bookings into the hours you will actually be nearby. A buffer is set aside too, so one delay does not break the whole day.

Under the hood it is an instruction file that tells the agent to act as a travel logistics planner. Output follows a fixed template with a recommendations block and next steps, plus a backup plan if something falls through. That fixed shape means you can paste the result into notes or pass it along.

It is meant for trips with multiple stops. For a single city in a single evening there is nothing to optimize, so the skill adds little. Install runs through npx skills add, and GitHub Copilot uses gh skill install instead.

What it helps with

  • fit five cities into a week without losing half a day to transfers
  • book dinner for the hour you will actually be in that neighborhood
  • keep slack in the day for an unplanned stop
  • estimate travel time between route points
  • have a backup plan ready when the day falls apart

Example prompts for the agent

  • Plan a 4-day route through Rome, Florence and Bologna. Account for train transfers and leave half a day of buffer.
  • Lay out these places across the days and tell me which hours to book dinner for.
  • Give me a backup version of the route in case it rains on day three.
