What initialize-ai-navigation does

This skill guides Unity AI Navigation setup, from checking com.unity.ai.navigation to creating NavMeshSurface, NavMeshAgent, NavMeshObstacle, and NavMeshLink components. It first looks for navigation components in scenes and prefabs, checks agent types, and gathers requirements for walkable areas, routes, obstacles, and area costs.

The workflow covers baking a NavMesh, adding agents, dynamic obstacles, links across disconnected areas, and scripts for patrols, click-to-move, or animation. Validation checks agent paths, matching agent types, area masks, and Rigidbody settings. C# sent to eval needs fully qualified types; using directives cause compilation errors there.

Do not guess the package version: a version that does not exist can make Unity package resolution fail silently. That is a reason to verify it against the Unity registry or a nearby package in Packages/manifest.json.

What it helps with

  • bake a NavMesh for walkable surfaces
  • add pathfinding to a character
  • build a patrol route between points
  • connect separated areas with NavMeshLink
  • configure avoidance around dynamic obstacles

Example prompts for the agent

  • Set up Unity AI Navigation for this character and bake the NavMesh.
  • Create a patrol between waypoints for my NavMesh agent.
  • Why cannot my NavMeshAgent find a path? Inspect the current scene.

Questions about initialize-ai-navigation

How do I install initialize-ai-navigation in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add Unity-Technologies/skills --skill initialize-ai-navigation -a claude-code, then run npx skills add Unity-Technologies/skills --skill initialize-ai-navigation -a claude-code again. The skill file is at ~/.claude/skills/initialize-ai-navigation/SKILL.md.

What does initialize-ai-navigation do?

It guides setup for Unity AI Navigation components including NavMesh surfaces, agents, obstacles, links, and area settings. It also checks baked navigation and agent routes.

What should I know before sending C# to eval?

eval compiles a statement block, so it cannot use using directives. Unity types in that code must be fully qualified.
