helm-charts — Claude Code skill: Helm charts and releases
A skill for Helm work: builds chart templates, edits values.yaml, installs and rolls back Kubernetes releases.
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill helm-charts -a claude-codeWhat helm-charts does
The skill lays out chart structure: Chart.yaml, values.yaml, templates/ and charts/, plus .helmignore. It ships templates for Deployment, Ingress, ConfigMap and Secret, and helper definitions in _helpers.tpl for names and labels. Conditional resources are gated with {{- if .Values.ingress.enabled -}}, and dependencies go into Chart.yaml with a condition such as postgresql.enabled.
Commands get their own section. helm install, helm upgrade, helm rollback and helm uninstall come with flag examples: -f custom-values.yaml, --set replicaCount=3, -n production --create-namespace. Chart development covers helm create, helm lint, helm template and helm package. Repositories are added with helm repo add and refreshed with helm repo update.
You need Helm 3.x and a configured kubectl with cluster access. No cluster access means install and rollback commands fail, leaving only local template rendering. The source cuts off inside the hooks section, so for helm.sh/hook-delete-policy and the rest of the lifecycle annotations, check the Helm docs.
What it helps with
- scaffold a chart with Deployment, Service and Ingress templates
- move settings into values.yaml and override them at install time
- install a release into its own namespace and create that namespace
- roll a release back to an earlier revision
- pull a third-party chart from a repo and inspect its values
Example prompts for the agent
- create a chart called mychart with deployment and service templates
- show me how to override replicaCount and image.tag on helm install
- help me roll back the myapp release to revision 1

.agents/skills/helm-charts/SKILL.mdFor all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill helm-charts -a cursor2Manually: put the files in place

Questions about helm-charts
How do I install helm-charts in Claude?
Run npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill helm-charts -a claude-code. The skill file then sits at ~/.claude/skills/helm-charts/SKILL.md.
What does the helm-charts skill do?
It helps you build and maintain Helm charts: manifest templates, helpers, values, release install and rollback, and chart repositories.
What do I need before using it?
Helm 3.x, a configured kubectl with cluster access, and basic Kubernetes knowledge. Without cluster access you are limited to rendering templates locally.

## Advanced Features
### Hooks
```yaml
# templates/pre-install-job.yaml
apiVersion: batch/v1
kind: Job
metadata:
name: {{ include "myapp.fullname" . }}-migration
annotations:
"helm.sh/hook": pre-install,pre-upgrade
"helm.sh/hook-weight": "-5"
"helm.sh/hook-delete-policy": hook-succeeded
spec:
template:
spec:
containers:
- name: migrate
image: "{{ .Values.image.repository }}:{{ .Values.image.tag }}"
command: ["./migrate.sh"]
restartPolicy: Never
```
### Tests
```yaml
# templates/tests/test-connection.yaml
apiVersion: v1
kind: Pod
metadata:
name: "{{ include "myapp.fullname" . }}-test-connection"
annotations:
"helm.sh/hook": test
spec:
containers:
- name: wget
image: busybox
command: ['wget']
args: ['{{ include "myapp.fullname" . }}:{{ .Values.service.port }}']
restartPolicy: Never
```
```bash
# Run tests
helm test myapp
```
### Library Charts
```yaml
# Chart.yaml
apiVersion: v2
name: mylib
type: library
version: 1.0.0
```
```yaml
# Using library chart
dependencies:
- name: mylib
version: "1.x.x"
repository: "file://../mylib"
```
## OCI Registry Support
```bash
# Login to registry
helm registry login registry.example.com
# Push chart to OCI registry
helm push mychart-1.0.0.tgz oci://registry.example.com/charts
# Pull from OCI registry
helm pull oci://registry.example.com/charts/mychart --version 1.0.0
# Install from OCI
helm install myapp oci://registry.example.com/charts/mychart
```
## Common Issues
### Issue: YAML Indentation Errors
**Problem**: Template renders with wrong indentation
**Solution**: Use `nindent` helper function
```yaml
{{- toYaml .Values.resources | nindent 12 }}
```
### Issue: Values Not Applying
**Problem**: Custom values not reflected
**Solution**: Check value paths, use `--debug` flag
```bash
helm template myapp ./mychart --debug
```
### Issue: Dependency Errors
**Problem**: Chart dependencies not found
**Solution**: Run `helm dependency update`
### Issue: Release Already Exists
**Problem**: Cannot install, release exists
**Solution**: Use `helm upgrade --install`
```bash
helm upgrade --install myapp ./mychart
```
## Best Practices
- Use semantic versioning for charts
- Provide comprehensive default values
- Document all values in values.yaml with comments
- Use helper templates for repeated patterns
- Implement chart tests
- Use .helmignore to exclude unnecessary files
- Pin dependency versions
- Use `helm lint` in CI pipelines
