git-context-controller — Claude Code skill: how to install and use
Maintains agent memory inside a versioned .GCC/ folder. It records task milestones, isolates experimental branches, and restores historical context across development sessions.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill git/git-context-controllerWhat git-context-controller does
The skill organizes agent memory into a dedicated .GCC/ directory instead of relying on raw conversation history. Work objectives live in main.md, while metadata.yaml tracks branch states and file trees. Four core actions handle project continuity.
First-time setup relies on running scripts/gcc_init.sh to generate the file structure. Without this script, .GCC/ does not exist. Every branch gets its own isolated folder with commit.md and log.md. Merging summarizes outcomes and records a synthesis commit on the primary branch.
Agent decisions get recorded in an OTA log covering observations and actions. The log holds up to 50 entries. Older records get pruned automatically. Setting proactive_commits: true in metadata.yaml prompts the assistant to suggest commits after finishing a module or fixing a defect.
What it helps with
- save milestone progress with
/gcc commit - branch out alternative implementations in isolation
- merge experimental findings into the project roadmap
- reload cross-session background via
--fullcontext recovery
Example prompts for the agent
- /gcc commit "Finished API rate limiter"
- /gcc branch auth-refactor
- /gcc context --full

Questions about git-context-controller
How do I install git-context-controller in Claude Code?
Run npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill git/git-context-controller in your terminal. You can also install it by running npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill git-context-controller -a claude-code.
What does git-context-controller do?
It structures assistant context inside a .GCC/ directory with Git-style branches, checkpoints, and execution logs. This keeps multi-step work organized and lets you recover context across separate chat sessions.
How do proactive commits work?
When proactive_commits: true is configured in .GCC/metadata.yaml, the agent suggests saving milestones upon completing a task or verifying a bugfix. You can also toggle this by telling the agent "enable proactive commits".
