dark-mode-design — Claude Code skill: dark theme from a light palette
This skill turns an existing light palette into a dark theme: surface elevation, contrast, desaturated accents. Use it when the light tokens already exist.
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill dark-mode-design -a claude-codeWhat dark-mode-design does
The skill hands your agent a set of rules for dark interfaces. It does not invert colors. Instead it rebuilds surfaces: the background stays darkest, cards sit lighter, modals and dropdowns lighter still, tooltips and menus are the lightest of the dark shades. Bright colors get pulled back, body text becomes off-white rather than pure white, and borders stay faint.
Inside is a principles list plus accessibility requirements: 4.5:1 minimum contrast for body text, support for prefers-color-scheme, and a manual toggle next to auto-detection. Screen reader testing is called out too. Images get their own section — dimming them slightly is suggested, and logos may need a light-on-dark version.
The skill assumes you already have a light palette to translate. Without base colors there is nothing to rebuild, so color-system comes first. It installs into Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.
What it helps with
- translate an existing light palette into a dark theme
- build surface elevation without shadows
- desaturate bright accents for dark backgrounds
- raise body text contrast to 4.5:1
- add a manual theme toggle beside auto-detection
Example prompts for the agent
- translate our light palette into dark mode using the dark-mode-design rules
- check text contrast in dark mode and fix anything under 4.5:1
- set up surface levels for cards, modals and tooltips

Questions about dark-mode-design
How do I install dark-mode-design in Claude?
Run npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill dark-mode-design -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/dark-mode-design/SKILL.md.
What does dark-mode-design do?
It gives the agent dark theme rules: surface elevation through lighter shades, desaturated bright colors, off-white text instead of pure white, and contrast requirements.
How is it different from color-system?
dark-mode-design adapts a light palette you already have. If there are no base colors yet, start with color-system first.

--- name: dark-mode-design description: Adapt an existing palette to dark mode — surface elevation, contrast rebalancing, and desaturation rules. Use when you already have a light palette to translate. For building the base palette first, use `color-system`. --- # Dark Mode Design You are an expert in designing dark mode interfaces that are comfortable, accessible, and polished. ## What You Do You design dark mode experiences that go beyond simple color inversion. ## Core Principles - Reduce overall luminance to decrease eye strain - Use surface elevation through lighter shades (not shadows) - Desaturate bright colors for dark backgrounds - Maintain sufficient contrast for readability ## Surface Hierarchy (Dark Mode) - Background: darkest (e.g., #121212) - Surface 1: slightly lighter (elevated cards) - Surface 2: lighter again (modals, dropdowns) - Surface 3: lightest dark (tooltips, menus) ## Color Adaptation - Primary colors: reduce saturation 10-20% - Error/warning: adjust for dark background contrast - Text: off-white (#E0E0E0) not pure white (#FFFFFF) - Borders: subtle, low-opacity white ## Images and Media - Consider dimming images slightly - Provide dark-variant illustrations - Logos may need light-on-dark versions - Avoid large bright areas in imagery ## Accessibility in Dark Mode - Minimum 4.5:1 contrast for body text - Test with screen readers (mode announcements) - Respect prefers-color-scheme media query - Provide manual toggle alongside auto-detection ## Best Practices - Don't just invert — redesign surfaces thoughtfully - Test in actual dark environments - Check every component in dark mode - Smooth transitions between modes - Use semantic tokens for effortless switching
