What create-react-native-library does

The skill drives create-react-native-library for you. It asks the agent to pick one of two flows first: a standalone library that can go to npm, or a local library inside an existing app. From there it follows the matching reference file.

Two docs sit in references/: scaffold-library.md for a new library with an Expo example, and local-library.md for a local library with autolinking. A problem-to-skill table maps each task to its entry point, so the agent does not start guessing. JS-only libraries, native modules and native UI components are all covered.

Check the current flags before you run anything: npx create-react-native-library@latest --help. The examples pass --no-interactive and --yes, so nothing prompts you — skip --description, --type or --languages and you get a scaffold you did not want. Worth checking those up front.

What it helps with

  • scaffold a new React Native library for npm
  • add a local native module to an existing app
  • wrap a native SDK and expose it to JavaScript
  • build a native UI component that renders native views
  • decide between a standalone library and a local one

Example prompts for the agent

  • Scaffold a new React Native library called awesome-library with a turbo module and the Expo example
  • Add a local turbo module to my app with create-react-native-library
  • Wrap this native SDK in a module and expose it to JavaScript

How to install create-react-native-library

Questions about create-react-native-library

How do I install create-react-native-library in Claude?

Run npx skills add callstackincubator/agent-skills --skill create-react-native-library -a claude-code. The skill file then lives at ~/.claude/skills/create-react-native-library/SKILL.md.

What is the difference between the two flows?

scaffold-library.md covers a new publishable library with an Expo example. local-library.md covers a local library inside an existing app with autolinking.

# Create React Native Library

## Overview

Use this skill to scaffold a standalone React Native library or a local library inside an existing app, then continue with the correct implementation docs.

Examples:

- JS-only library that may use other React Native libraries
- Native modules that expose native functionality to JavaScript
- Native UI components that render native views in React Native

Choose one flow first:

- Use [scaffold-library.md][scaffold-library] when creating a new library that may be published to npm
- Use [local-library.md][local-library] when exposing native functionality in a React Native app

## When to Apply

Use this skill when:

- Creating or working on a React Native library with `create-react-native-library`
- Creating a native module or view in an existing app
- Wrapping native SDKs and exposing them to React Native

## Quick Reference

```bash
# Inspect current options before scaffolding
npx create-react-native-library@latest --help
# Scaffold a library with turbo modules and the Expo example app
npx create-react-native-library@latest awesome-library \
  --no-interactive \
  --yes \
  --description "A brief description of the library" \
  --type turbo-module \
  --languages kotlin-objc \
  --example expo
# Scaffold a local Turbo Module inside an existing app
cd MyApp
npx create-react-native-library@latest awesome-library \
  --local \
  --no-interactive \
  --yes \
  --description "A brief description of the library" \
  --type turbo-module \
  --languages kotlin-objc
```
