What color-expert does

color-expert hands your agent a reference library on color science: OKLCH and OKLAB, palette generation, accessibility and contrast checks, color naming, pigment mixing, and historical color theory. The agent pulls from it when it needs to pick shades or compute contrast instead of guessing values.

The skill is curated from @meodai's work. The OpenDesign catalogue entry only advertises it, so running the full upstream workflow with its original assets and scripts means installing the upstream bundle into your agent's skills directory. Once installed, invoke it by name (color-expert) or with a trigger phrase such as "color theory", "palette generator", "color science", "oklch palette" or "contrast check".

Install goes through npx skills add nexu-io/open-design --skill color-expert with a flag for your agent. GitHub Copilot uses a different command: gh skill install. Installing by hand puts the skill file at a path like ~/.claude/skills/color-expert/SKILL.md.

What it helps with

  • build an OKLCH palette for light and dark themes
  • check text-on-background contrast before shipping
  • name shades for a design system
  • work out pigment mixing for an illustration
  • figure out why two colors read as equally bright

Example prompts for the agent

  • Build an OKLCH palette for a dark theme and check each shade's contrast against the background
  • Check the contrast of #333 text on a #f5f5f5 background and tell me if it passes accessibility
  • Suggest names for these five blue shades
