code-refactoring-refactor-clean — Claude Code skill: how to install
Analyzes code smells and plans stepwise refactoring based on SOLID and clean code principles. Helps clean tangled modules before introducing new features.
npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill code-refactoring-refactor-clean -a claude-codeWhat code-refactoring-refactor-clean does
The skill evaluates dependencies, highlights risky hotspots, and breaks down refactoring into small, verifiable slices. It requires preserving external behavior, error handling, duplicate ordering, and side-effect timing. If detailed design patterns are needed, the instructions direct the agent to inspect resources/implementation-playbook.md.
A key stance is avoiding purely mechanical code splits just to satisfy line limits or argument counts. Metric thresholds for coverage and code smells act as rough heuristics rather than quality guarantees. The prompt also notes that combining database persistence with notifications requires an outbox or idempotent design, so a failed notification never duplicates an order.
What it helps with
- break down tangled modules into incremental refactoring steps
- eliminate code smells without altering external behavior
- isolate dependencies using SOLID design patterns
- improve unit testability before adding new features
Example prompts for the agent
- Assess code smells in orderService.ts and propose an incremental refactoring plan.
- Refactor this legacy payment module to follow SOLID principles while keeping tests green.
- Analyze the dependencies in our user repository and suggest safe slices to reduce complexity.

Analyze and refactor the provided code to improve its quality, maintainability, and performance. ## Use this skill when - Refactoring tangled or hard-to-maintain code - Reducing duplication, complexity, or code smells - Improving testability and design consistency - Preparing modules for new features safely ## Do not use this skill when - You only need a small one-line fix - Refactoring is prohibited due to change freeze - The request is for documentation only ## Context The user needs help refactoring code to make it cleaner, more maintainable, and aligned with best practices. Focus on practical improvements that enhance code quality without over-engineering. ## Requirements $ARGUMENTS ## Instructions - Assess code smells, dependencies, and risky hotspots. - Propose a refactor plan with incremental steps. - Apply changes in small slices and keep behavior stable. - Update tests and verify regressions. - If detailed patterns are required, open `resources/implementation-playbook.md`. ## Safety - Avoid changing external behavior without explicit approval. - Keep diffs reviewable and ensure tests pass. ## Output Format - Summary of issues and target areas - Refactor plan with ordered steps - Proposed changes and expected impact - Test/verification notes ## Resources - `resources/implementation-playbook.md` for detailed patterns and examples. ## Limitations - Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above. - Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review. - Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing. ## Behavior preservation and evidence The numeric smell/coverage/ROI thresholds are heuristics, not universal quality gates or measured benefits. Preserve public behavior, duplicate ordering, transactions, side-effect timing, errors and compatibility unless a change is explicitly intended. Characterize meaningful invariants before a risky refactor; do not mechanically split functions to meet line/parameter limits. Examples are incomplete independent fragments, not a compiled project: repository find_by_id, framework helpers, discount implementation, EmailService and Logger are missing. Persistence plus email needs an idempotent/outbox strategy because a failed notification after commit must not repeat the order. Validate authorization and server-trusted prices before processing money. Email regex checks shape, not deliverability/ownership; caches need tenant keys, invalidation and sensitive-data policy. Static-analysis snippets are leads: generic execute($QUERY) is not proof of SQL injection, and CodeQL analyze alone is not a full initialized/extracted workflow. Inspect actual tool versions/configuration before running; preserve existing gates and do not replace tests with an AI pass. Report only measured before/after metrics and actual dashboard URLs; no coverage, security absence or performance improvement is certified by these sketches. No code from the playbook was executed.
