azure-deploy — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Deploys an already-prepared application to Azure with azd, Terraform, or Azure CLI. It expects a validated deployment plan before running.
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-deploy -a claude-codeWhat azure-deploy does
azure-deploy runs deployment work for an application that already has its project and infrastructure prepared. It reads .azure/deployment-plan.md, checks for the Validated status and validation proof, loads the matching recipe, then executes commands such as azd up, azd deploy, terraform apply, or az deployment.
The skill includes a pre-deployment checklist, error handling, an RBAC check for Container Apps with ACR, and post-deployment steps for SQL managed identity and EF Core migrations when applicable. It verifies endpoint access and live Azure roles, then reports endpoints as https:// URLs. Deployment cannot proceed without a validated .azure/deployment-plan.md.
MCP tools can list subscriptions and resource groups, run AZD commands, and inspect role assignments. The skill is available for Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
What it helps with
- deploy an already-prepared application to Azure
- run
azd uporazd deploy - apply prepared infrastructure with
terraform apply - check Azure RBAC after deployment
- verify that deployed endpoints are reachable
Example prompts for the agent
- Deploy the prepared application with
azd up, then verify the result. - Run
azd deployto publish the latest changes to the existing Azure deployment. - Apply the prepared Terraform setup with
terraform apply, then check the endpoints and Azure roles.
How to install azure-deploy
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-deploy -a claude-code2Manually: put the files in place
~/.claude/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.mdCopy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-deploy/
Manually: put the files in place
.agents/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.mdFor all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
Manually: put the files in place
.cursor/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.mdCursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
1GitHub CLI
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-deploy2Manually: put the files in place
.github/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.mdPlatform CLI
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-deployManually: put the files in place
.devin/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.mdThe legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

Questions about azure-deploy
How do I install azure-deploy in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-deploy -a claude-code, then use ~/.claude/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md.
What does azure-deploy do?
It deploys an application whose code and infrastructure are already prepared. The skill runs azd up, azd deploy, terraform apply, or az deployment, with error handling and post-deployment checks.
What must be ready before using azure-deploy?
The project needs .azure/deployment-plan.md with status Validated and a populated Validation Proof section. azure-prepare creates the plan, while azure-validate verifies it.

It does not create applications, generate infrastructure code, or scaffold projects. For those tasks, use **azure-prepare**. > **APIM / AI Gateway**: Use this skill to deploy applications whose APIM/AI gateway infrastructure was already created during **azure-prepare**. For creating or changing APIM resources, see [APIM deployment guide](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/api-management/get-started-create-service-instance). For AI governance policies, invoke **azure-aigateway** skill. ## Rules 1. Run after azure-prepare and azure-validate 2. `.azure/deployment-plan.md` must exist with status `Validated` 3. **Pre-deploy checklist required** — [Pre-Deploy Checklist](references/pre-deploy-checklist.md) 4. ⛔ **Destructive actions require `ask_user`** — [global-rules](references/global-rules.md) 5. **Scope: deployment execution only** — This skill owns execution of `azd up`, `azd deploy`, `terraform apply`, and `az deployment` commands. These commands are run through this skill's error recovery and verification pipeline. --- ## Steps | # | Action | Reference | |---|--------|-----------| | 1 | **Check Plan** — Read `.azure/deployment-plan.md`, verify status = `Validated` AND **Validation Proof** section is populated | `.azure/deployment-plan.md` | | 2 | **Pre-Deploy Checklist** — MUST complete ALL steps | [Pre-Deploy Checklist](references/pre-deploy-checklist.md) | | 3 | **Load Recipe** — Based on `recipe.type` in `.azure/deployment-plan.md` | [recipes/README.md](references/recipes/README.md) | | 4 | **RBAC Health Check** — For Container Apps + ACR with managed identity: run `azd provision --no-prompt`, then verify `AcrPull` role has propagated before proceeding (see checklist) | [Pre-Deploy Checklist — Container Apps RBAC](references/pre-deploy-checklist.md#container-apps--acr--pre-deploy-rbac-health-check) | | 5 | **Execute Deploy** — Follow recipe steps | Recipe README | | 6 | **Post-Deploy** — Configure SQL managed identity and apply EF migrations if applicable | [Post-Deployment](references/recipes/azd/post-deployment.md) | | 7 | **Handle Errors** — See recipe's `errors.md` | — | | 8 | **Verify Success** — Confirm deployment completed and endpoints are accessible | [Verification](references/recipes/azd/verify.md) | | 9 | **Live Role Verification** — Query Azure to confirm provisioned RBAC roles are correct and sufficient | [live-role-verification.md](references/live-role-verification.md) | | 10 | **Report Results** — Present deployed endpoint URLs to the user as fully-qualified `https://` links | [Verification](references/recipes/azd/verify.md) | > **⛔ URL FORMAT RULE** > > When presenting endpoint URLs to the user, you **MUST** always use fully-qualified URLs with the `https://` scheme (e.g. `https://myapp.azurewebsites.net`, not `myapp.azurewebsites.net`).
