125-java-concurrency — Claude Code skill: Java concurrency review
A skill that has your coding agent review Java code for race conditions, lock contention and thread leaks, then apply modern java.util.concurrent fixes.
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 125-java-concurrency -a claude-codeWhat 125-java-concurrency does
The skill fires when you ask the agent to review Java code for thread safety, fix a race condition, or pick between ExecutorService and virtual threads. It ships a reference of good and bad examples per topic: ConcurrentHashMap, AtomicInteger, ReentrantLock, ReadWriteLock, the Java Memory Model, thread pool sizing and shutdown, BlockingQueue for producer-consumer, CompletableFuture composition, volatile and safe publication, StructuredTaskScope, ScopedValue instead of ThreadLocal, cancellation discipline, backpressure with bounded queues and CallerRunsPolicy, global lock ordering and tryLock with timeouts, plus LongAdder, StampedLock, Semaphore, CountDownLatch, Phaser, and pinning detection through the JFR VirtualThreadPinned event.
The workflow is short. The agent runs ./mvnw compile or mvn compile first and stops if the build fails, so nothing gets edited on a broken tree. Then it reads references/125-java-concurrency.md, finds the hotspots and applies the patterns. It finishes with ./mvnw clean verify or mvn clean verify. Your project has to build with Maven, since every step hangs off those commands.
Part of Plinth Toolkit, Apache-2.0. Changes stay in your source files — build config and dependencies are left alone.
What it helps with
- find a race on a shared mutable object that only breaks under load
- size a thread pool and its queue before it starts rejecting tasks
- move cross-task data from
ThreadLocaltoScopedValue - order locks globally so two threads stop deadlocking
- check whether a virtual thread pins on a blocking call
Example prompts for the agent
- Review this class for thread safety and list the problem spots
- There's a race on the shared list — fix it
- Should this I/O code move to virtual threads?

Questions about 125-java-concurrency
How do I install 125-java-concurrency in Claude?
Run npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 125-java-concurrency -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/125-java-concurrency/SKILL.md.
What does 125-java-concurrency do?
It reviews Java code for concurrency problems and applies fixes: thread pools, locks, async chains, cancellation, virtual threads. It works from a reference of good and bad code patterns.
What does the skill need to run?
A project that builds with Maven. The agent runs ./mvnw compile or mvn compile first and stops on failure, then runs ./mvnw clean verify or mvn clean verify after the changes.

--- name: 125-java-concurrency description: Use when you need to apply Java concurrency best practices — including thread safety fundamentals, ExecutorService thread pool management, concurrent design patterns like Producer-Consumer, asynchronous programming with CompletableFuture, immutability and safe publication, deadlock avoidance, virtual threads, structured concurrency, scoped values, backpressure, cancellation discipline, and observability for concurrent systems. This should trigger for requests such as Review Java code for concurrency; Review Java code for thread safety; Fix race conditions in Java concurrency code; Choose ExecutorService or virtual threads in Java; Improve synchronization and shared mutable state handling; Apply structured concurrency for related Java subtasks. Part of Plinth Toolkit license: Apache-2.0 metadata: author: Juan Antonio Breña Moral version: 0.19.0 --- # Java rules for Concurrency objects Identify and apply Java concurrency best practices to improve thread safety, scalability, and maintainability by using modern `java.util.concurrent` utilities and virtual threads. **What is covered in this Skill?** - Thread safety fundamentals: `ConcurrentHashMap`, `AtomicInteger`, `ReentrantLock`, `ReadWriteLock`, Java Memory Model - `ExecutorService` thread pool configuration: sizing, keep-alive, bounded queues, rejection policies, graceful shutdown - Producer-Consumer and Publish-Subscribe patterns with `BlockingQueue` - `CompletableFuture` for non-blocking async composition (`thenApply`/`thenCompose`/`exceptionally`/`orTimeout`) - Immutability and safe publication (`volatile`, static initializers) - Lock contention and false-sharing performance optimization - Virtual threads (`Executors.newVirtualThreadPerTaskExecutor()`) for I/O-bound scalability - Structured Concurrency (`StructuredTaskScope`) for related subtasks in Java 27 preview - `ScopedValue` over `ThreadLocal` for immutable cross-task data - Cooperative cancellation and `InterruptedException` discipline - Backpressure with bounded queues and `CallerRunsPolicy` - Deadlock avoidance via global lock ordering and `tryLock` with timeouts - ForkJoin/parallel-stream discipline for CPU-bound work - Virtual-thread pinning detection (JFR `VirtualThreadPinned`) - Thread naming and `UncaughtExceptionHandler` observability - Fit-for-purpose primitives: `LongAdder`, `CopyOnWriteArrayList`, `StampedLock`, `Semaphore`, `CountDownLatch`, `Phaser` **Scope:** The reference is organized by examples (good/bad code patterns) for each core area. Apply recommendations based on applicable examples. ## Constraints Before applying any concurrency changes, ensure the project compiles. If compilation fails, stop immediately — compilation failure is a blocking condition. After applying improvements, run full verification. - **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change - **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately — compilation failure is a blocking condition that prevents any further processing - **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements - **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed good/bad examples, constraints, and safeguards for each concurrency pattern ## When to use this skill - Review Java code for concurrency - Review Java code for thread safety - Fix race conditions in Java concurrency code - Choose ExecutorService or virtual threads in Java - Improve synchronization and shared mutable state handling - Apply structured concurrency for related Java subtasks ## Workflow 1. **Compile project before concurrency changes** Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` and stop immediately if compilation fails. 2. **Read concurrency reference and analyze hotspots** Read `references/125-java-concurrency.md` and identify thread-safety, coordination, and throughput issues to address. 3. **Apply concurrency improvements** Implement suitable concurrency patterns, structured task scopes where they fit related subtasks, cancellation discipline, and fit-for-purpose primitives. 4. **Verify with full build** Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements. ## Reference For detailed guidance, examples, and constraints, see [references/125-java-concurrency.md](references/125-java-concurrency.md).
