What 10x-cli-setup does

This skill handles the setup side of the 10xDevs CLI. It starts by looking for an existing runner: checks what is on PATH, reads 10x --version, and asks the get, sync and auth subcommands for help. A working install stays as it is. No reinstall, no second login.

Next comes a compatibility pass against the bundled reference: which release supports the syntax you need, and whether skill filtering exists yet. When no suitable global CLI is present, the skill offers an npx run instead of a system-wide install. One catch: 10x helpers install --tool <chosen-profile> is unreleased and missing from the current baselines, so confirm it with helpers --help on your own runner before relying on it. The npm route checks Node against the package engines, which means Node 20 or newer here. A permissions failure gets diagnosed, never fixed with sudo or a wiped config.

Login is treated separately from course access, via auth --status. When sign-in is needed, you run auth yourself in an interactive terminal and finish the magic-link flow over email or Circle. The skill never reads auth.json or tokens. The last step is doctor --json, which compares the configured tool profile and reports the course edition the project is bound to. Offline, publication and download checks stay open, so a local version readout alone does not mean setup is done.

What it helps with

  • install 10x-cli without breaking an existing working setup
  • confirm the runner version actually supports skill filtering
  • find out why auth --status does not confirm course access
  • tell an npm permissions error apart from a broken PATH
  • check the project is bound to the right course edition before the first download

Example prompts for the agent

  • Check whether 10x-cli is installed and show me its version and auth help
  • Install a compatible runner through npx and verify my login, leave the global CLI alone
  • Run doctor --json and explain which course edition this project is bound to
