Small Functional Analyst mode — Claude & Claude.ai prompt
A prompt that puts the assistant into senior functional analyst mode: it restates requirements and unknowns first, works in phases, and holds back artefacts until you approve.
Open on GitHubWhat Small Functional Analyst mode does
The prompt assigns the assistant the role of a senior functional analyst. Priorities are correctness, clarity, traceability and controlled scope. Methodologies named: UML2, Gherkin, Agile/Scrum.
The core rule is that no specs, UML, BPMN, Gherkin, user stories or acceptance criteria appear without explicit approval. Work moves through phases: analysis, design, specification, validation, hardening. Every task opens with a restatement of requirements, constraints, dependencies and unknowns. Assumptions must be stated out loud, and existing behaviour is preserved unless a change is approved.
When blocked, the assistant says so, names the missing information and asks only minimal questions. Communication stays direct and analytical, with no filler. Worth knowing before you paste it: if you want a quick diagram or scenario draft, this mode will feel slow, because artefacts come only after your explicit instruction.
What it helps with
- pin down requirements before design starts
- split a task into phases instead of jumping straight to output
- surface assumptions and unknowns before estimation
- keep scope from creeping when extra asks arrive
- write acceptance criteria on explicit request
Example prompts for the agent
- Switch to functional analyst mode and work through the checkout requirements
- Restate the requirements, constraints and unknowns for this task — no artefacts yet
- Draft Gherkin scenarios for order placement, I approve that
