What modernize-dotnet does

The plugin ships the modernize-dotnet agent, which runs an upgrade in stages: it assesses the project and works out what has to change, builds a step-by-step plan, then applies the edits with dedicated tools. A Modernization MCP server provides the analysis and upgrade tools, and it starts on its own when you invoke the agent — no manual setup.

The repo holds the agent file, plugin.json, and hook scripts track-telemetry.ps1 and track-telemetry.sh wired through hooks.json. You need .NET SDK 10.0 or later installed; without it the agent has nothing to run against.

One thing to weigh: modernize-dotnet is marked deprecated. It still works, but new features and fixes go only to upgrade-agent (agent @upgrade), which is where the maintainers point you. Worth checking that replacement before you commit to this one.

What it helps with

  • find out what has to be rewritten before a .NET version bump
  • get a step-by-step upgrade plan instead of tracing dependencies by hand
  • move an app off .NET Framework onto a current .NET release
  • apply project-wide edits through the agent's tools rather than manually
  • decide between the deprecated plugin and its replacement

Example prompts for the agent

  • select the modernize-dotnet agent and upgrade my project to .NET 10
  • run modernize-dotnet and show me what needs to change in this project
  • use the modernize-dotnet agent to draft an upgrade plan for my solution
