grants — Claude Code plugin: what it does, how to install
Matches clinical research ideas with NIH grant mechanisms and generates a 9-section DOCX report with study sections and submission timelines.
/plugin marketplace add alirezarezvani/claude-skills
/plugin install grants@claude-code-skillsWhat grants does
The plugin focuses entirely on NIH funding. Before running queries, it conducts an intake questionnaire covering career stage and preliminary findings. It then runs a 5-facet Consensus search to draft initial Significance and Innovation statements.
Data retrieval from the NIH RePORTER database relies on curl POST queries executed via bash_tool, which means web_fetch alone is insufficient. The tool identifies funded projects, uncovers active NOSI notices, and maps topics to R01, R21, or K-awards. It outputs an editable 9-section .docx file containing mechanism matches and program officer guidance. Non-NIH funders such as DOD CDMRP, VA, or PCORI are intentionally excluded.
What it helps with
- match clinical research projects to NIH mechanisms like R01, R21, or K-awards
- query NIH RePORTER via POST requests to map funded projects and study sections
- extract active NOSI notices and matching grant opportunities
- generate an editable 9-section DOCX report with submission timelines
Example prompts for the agent
- /cs-grants early biomarker detection in Alzheimer's disease
- Help me find NIH funding opportunities for a pediatric clinical trial
- Find matching NIH grant mechanisms for my preliminary oncology data

Questions about grants
How do I install grants in Claude Code?
First, register the marketplace source by running /plugin marketplace add alirezarezvani/claude-skills. Next, install the plugin by running /plugin install grants@claude-code-skills.
Which funding agencies does the grants plugin support?
The plugin is strictly limited to NIH institutes. Non-NIH grantmakers like DOD CDMRP, PCORI, VA, and private foundations are out of scope and flagged during the intake step.
What dependencies does the grants plugin require?
You need Consensus MCP, the Node.js docx library, web_fetch for NOSI HTML pages, and bash_tool with curl for RePORTER POST requests.

# grants
NIH grant research skill for clinical researchers. Produces a strategic NIH funding overview as an editable `.docx`:
1. **Research positioning analysis** — 5-facet Consensus search producing gap quotes + draft Significance/Innovation language
2. **Institute mapping** — Which NIH institutes are actually funding this area (via RePORTER)
3. **Targeted grant discovery** — NOSIs, open FOAs, funded overlap filtered to mapped institutes
4. **Strategic recommendations** — Career-stage + project-scope mechanism matching, program officer guidance, submission timeline
## Sibling skill relationship
Part of the **research pack** (sibling of `pulse`, `litreview`; future siblings: `patent`, `dossier`, `syllabus`). All share the Agent Integrity Rules block (1 q/sec, source discipline, three-count tracking, retry-once-after-3s, stop-after-3-consecutive-failures).
**Different from `litreview`:**
- Adds **RePORTER POST** queries (not just Consensus) — NIH-specific funded-project data
- Adds **NOSI fetch** for `NOT-*` opportunity numbers
- DOCX has 9 sections (vs 8 in litreview) — adds Strategic Recommendations + Study Sections sections
- NIH-only scope; non-NIH funders out of scope
